The AFL’s Female Coach Scholarship scheme was instigated in 2010 to address the absence of higher level female coaches in the system. At that time there were only 5 accredited Level 2 female coaches and 1 High Performance (level 3) female coach.
After the first Scholarship round there are now 22 Level 2 female coaches. Some states and territories matched the AFL’s funding for this initiative which collectively has resulted in 16 scholarships being awarded from 18 applicants.
Several of the 2010 scholarship holders also recently attended the 2011 AFL National Coaching Conference.
Following this success the AFL are offering the Scholarship scheme again in 2011.
Testimony
The following testimonial was received from NSW 2010 recipient, Krissie Steen:
“just wanted to add that I learnt so much at the level two course. It was excellent and I've already been implementing a lot of the principles at training. The proof is in the pudding, people have already noticed the players making better decisions and they seem to be building more confidence in their own abilities. Definitely empowering!”
