On Saturday March 5, the second ever AFL Seven's Tournament was conducted now at the RAS Showground at Homebush in Sydney, an increase in teams and players made it a very successful event. As part of the overall Women In Sports Day conducted at Sydney Olympic Park which featured other sports, AFL through SWAFL and the AFL NSW/ACT was able to conduct a high-visibility event to highlight female football. Other events included a Guiness World Record Zumba mass-class which had many high-profile female athletes participating including All-star Marie Keating.
Many teams took the opportunity to give their new players a run in a competitive conditions without the full on pressure of a full-sized field and pressure tackling. There were 12 teams in the women's competition consisting of clubs from the ACT (Tuggeranong and Eastlake) and NSW (Auburn - 1st outing, Balmain, Macquarie Uni, Sydney Uni, UNSW/Easts) and teams from recreational football and the AFL Office.
Many skills of talent were displayed with Sydney University 2 point victors over Balmain in the final 4.4.28 to 4.2.26.
In the Youth Girls Division, new club South Campbelltown joined Northern Tigers (Woonona) and Shellharbour Swans. Shellharbour had a close game over the Tigers in the preliminary round but were able to remain undefeated throughout the day and was able to win in the final 3.3.21 to 1.0.6 against the Tigers.
Many thanks for all involved and one day more teams from NSW, ACT and maybe even the rest of Australia will come.
