Renegades Women, Magpies Men Claim Aussie Day Glory

Two local Mackay clubs celebrated victories in the Candlestick Park heat as the 2012 Code Bar & Nightclub Australia Day Basketball carnival wrapped up yesterday.

Renegades took out the women's division one grand final with a gritty 64-52 victory over Souths.  The Renegades were led by a solid inside performance from veteran Fiona McGrath, who finished with a game-high 22-points.  McGrath was well supported with some hot perimeter shooting by teammate Angela Garden, who contributed 21-points.  For Souths, young star Jillian Haughton was outstanding in a losing effort and finished with a team-high 21-points.

In the men's division one grand final the Borg's Real Estate Magpies accounted for Souths with a hard fought 88-81 victory.  In a scrappy encounter, Magpies guard and McDonalds Meteors player Matt Gange put on a polished performance with 24-points, which included five long-range triples.  Gange's backcourt partner Curt Ahwang was also solid finishing with 21-points.  For the opposition, Souths swingman Bradley Rasmussen battled hard all day to finish with 18-points while veteran big-man Peter Duck also played well notching up 17.

In the division two women's grand final the Titanz Angels accounted for the Schmickers with a convincing 70-54 win, while in the men's division two grand final encounter, Souths Gold defeated the Mavericks 61-56.
The Hamilton Island Fever took out the men's division two plate final with a 60-54 overtime victory over the Vision Vets.

The first ever international team to compete in the tournament, the Lae Blazers, drew a large crowd each time they played and their only loss in the tournament came in their semi-final clash with the Mavericks.
Mackay Basketball General Manager Joel Khalu said the tournament was big success.

"It was great to see so many people get down to the Crater to enjoy some pretty impressive basketball action," Khalu said.
"Across all the divisions the standard was high and very competitive which definitely made the games fun to watch."

"Mackay Basketball would like to thank all of the players, referees, volunteers and spectators for making this year's tournament a special event and we look forward to making it even bigger next year."
