National School Girls Under 16's Carnival
Western Australia’s State 16 Schoolgirls finished second at the National AFL Carnival in South Australia after a narrow loss to Victoria in the Grand Final.
WA got away to a great start and was leading until part way through the second quarter before Victoria hit back, eventually winning by 14 points in an extremely tight and physical game.
The WA girls played extremely well and did WA very proud. Every member of the team contributed throughout the week and all players can be pleased with their efforts.
Five states were represented at the Carnival with WA being joined by SA, Victoria, the Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory. Each state played each other once before moving on to finals.
WA started with a bye and then played South Australia in Round 2, defeating them by 11 goals in what was a great start to the Carnival.
In Round 3, WA took on archrivals Victoria in a rematch of last year’s Grand Final. Victoria got away to a four-goal lead by half time, however WA came out strongly in the second half to keep the final margin to four goals.
The girls fought hard and were disappointed to go down, however they rebounded strongly in Round 4 to defeat ACT by 117 points.
In the final game of the round robin, WA played Northern Territory and fine-tuned their game with a 99-point win in readiness for the rematch with Victoria in the Grand Final.
