Iti, Sutton signing bolsters big man stocks, Spartans welcome back key players

THE Brisbane Spartans have bolstered their big man stocks with the signing of former Sydney Kings centre Martin Iti.

Iti (pictured), who played high school and college basketball in the USA, has joined the Spartans for the 2015 SEABL season after playing the past several seasons with the Ipswich Force in the QBL where he averaged 8.2 points and 10.2 rebounds per game last year.

Fellow big Rory Sutton has also made the jump from Ipswich to the Spartans along with Iti.

Coach CJ Bruton said for the team to achieve its goals, Iti would have to have a big impact on both ends of the floor.

“Martin brings a great inside presence the loves to finish around the basket with a dunk. On the defensive end it’s about changing the opponents shot and rebounding the ball,” he said.

“Rory is a new addition to the team and is also a great person to have on the roster. Coming from Ipswich where he played a major role in them making the playoffs in the QBL. His toughness and presence is what every team needs.”

The 32-year-old Iti said he could not wait to start his tenure at the club.

“I came to the Spartans because the SEABL is a better league then what I've been playing in the last few years,” he said.

“I think what I bring to the team is a defensive presence and being able to play above the rim.”

A bunch of club stalwarts have also returned for the coming season with former Cairns Taipan Dean Brebner, Spartans fan favourite Jeff Morton and junior Tom Laycock, Louis Ilton and Pavle Krkeljas all set to call the Rowland Cowan Basketball Stadium home for another season.

“Dean is a solid veteran and now has added a new role as a father.  His experience and leadership will come through on and off the floor. There are not too many bigs that can stretch the floor to three-point range and be a knock down shooter,” Bruton said.

“Morty is a guy who hustles after every loose ball, is great on the defensive end. He has been a Spartan all his life and will be great to have again this year.

“Tom is a steady player that is fundamentally sound. He is a great listener and does what's asked of him.

“Louis is a returning player that has taken getting into shape to the next level. A hard worker and willing to do anything for the team

“Pavle has a nice mid-range game that isn't used a lot in today's game. He's ability to out run his opponents up and down the floor, set screen and create open shot is what I like.”
