New South Wales and the Northern Territory kicked off their 2009 AFL Women’s National Championship campaigns yesterday with New South Wales coming out on top after a hard fought victory in the Division 2 clash. An inaccurate start ended up costing the Northern Territory side as they wasted multiple opportunities in front of goal to go into the first break 1.4 to New South Wales’ solitary goal.
The intensity increased in the second quarter with New South Wales managing to get on top by four points at the major break thanks to hard work from Australian Defence Force team member, Trish Muller.
In the premiership quarter it was again New South Wales who were able to gain the ascendancy, holding Northern Territory scoreless as they kicked 4.1 to take a handy 29-point lead into the main break. Sadly for the Northern Territory fans and team members, a fairytale comeback wasn’t on the cards as New South Wales ran out eventual winners by 23 points to claim their first victory of the championships.
After the match, New South Wales coaches praised the efforts of Cassi Bell (4 goals) and Marie Keating (3 goals) whose accuracy in front of the goal proved vital in the wintery conditions. Northern Territory will walk away with a lot of heart from the match knowing they had their chances and the form of stars Kahlisha Rioli and Sonya Knapp promising big things over the next four days.
