How was the AFL Western District Commission formed?
In 2011, the AFL undertook a review of country football in Victoria. The findings recommended more regional level decision making and a direct investment of resources in to regions. To achieve this aim they recommended the establishment of commissions to independently represent all stakeholders in a region.
Who is the AFL Western District Commission?
The Western District Australian Football Commission (trading as AFL Western District) was established in April 2013 as an independent governance board focused on the development and management of football within the Western District Region of Victoria. Lachy Patterson was appointed to the role of Region General Manager in October 2013 and reports directly to the Commission. Commissioner biographies are below.
What are the Commission’s major areas of involvement and interest?
The AFL provides these to all 13 Commissions across Victoria:
- Participation: Increasing pathways for players of all ages, gender and abilities
- Community: Administrative and strategic support for leagues, clubs, schools
- Engagement: For our affiliates with the community
- Talent and Second Tier: Developing pathways, local representatives to elite competition
- Facilities: Supporting and assisting improvements in local facilities
- Fan Development: Building relationships with supporters and volunteers
- People and Culture: Ensuring the best people are working in our sport.
Who does the Commission represent?
The Commission will assist more than 5,700 players in the four senior leagues of Hampden, Warrnambool and District, Mininera and District and South West District. The Portland, Hamilton and Casterton and Coleraine Junior Football Leagues are also encompassed. This means dealing with 67 clubs, 230 teams – and associated umpiring bodies. Although we do not have a direct association we will work closely with netball authorities in the region given the strong links between the two sports. Geographically we stretch from Ararat-Great Western-Hamilton-Portland-Timboon-Camperdown-Cobden and Lismore.
