Newcastle Rugby League launches Season 100

The Newcastle Rugby League has launched the 2007 Tooheys Cup, its 100th season of Rugby League, at the Beach Hotel overlooking Newcastle's iconic Merewether Beach.

Launching the 2007 season Newcastle Rugby League General Manager jamie O'Connor said that 2006 was widely regarded as Newcastle's greatest season yet with 3 teams vying for the last semi final spot going into the last round, record crowds attended the Cadbury Schweppes Finals Series and the representative season was the most successful season in our history with a record win in the Country Divisonal Final at Cessnock followed by a record 12 players selected to represent Country.

He added that whilst 2006 would be hard to top all indications were that 2007 was shaping up to surpass the past successes. " When casting an eye over the players that have come into the Newcastle Division and the recruiting that has been undertaken it looks as though it will go down to the wire when semi final places are decided. With the close nature of the competition we should see a dramatic increase in crowd figures and with such quality player's entering the competition the representative selectors should be providing Mal Graham with another quality squad to work with. It is an exciting time for Newcastle Rugby League and we are looking forward to getting it all under way."

The 2007 Tooheys Cup kicks off with the match of the round likely to be the Grand Final Replay between Nelson Bay and Lakes United. Both teams have replaced their losses from last season and being billed as the teams to beat in this year's premiership.
