The North Coast Academy of Sport has opened applications for Athletes & Coaches to join our 2018-19 Basketball Program!
Due to major clashes, the Athlete Trial Date has been rescheduled to Sunday 2nd September at Grafton Sports Centre.
Supported and endorsed by Basketball NSW, the NCAS Developing Athlete Program (DAP) targets male and female North Coast basketballers in the U14-U16 age groups.
Get down to Sportz Central this Saturday evening to watch the Suns Men and Women in their final home games of the season. The Skyring Elements Women tip off at 5pm against Shoalhaven Tigers and the men at 7pm playing Manly Warringah Sea Eagles. Food, refreshments and bar available on the night. Let's get behind our teams for the final time this year.
Expressions of Interest are being sought for a NEW Draft League for our A Grade Women's Competition. Please note that B and C Grade will not change. Team nominations for B and C grade remain the same.
Due to a Northern Junior League Rep Basketball Carnival being played at Sportz Central this weekend, there will be no Primary School or Aussie Hoops basketball on Saturday, 16th June. All games will be back on Saturday, 23rd which is the last week before finals.
CHBA will be conducting Camps in the upcoming July School Holidays. A camp for any U/12 players will be held on Monday, 9th July. This camp is open to players of any ability. Wednesday, 11th & Friday 13th July there will be a high intensity camp for all U/14 to U/18 rep players. Camps will be run by our Development Officer, Patrick Williamson.
There will be no Friday night High School Comp or Saturday morning Primary School Comp this week due to Questacon being held at Sportz Central over the long weekend. Primary School comp will also miss the following Saturday, 16th June due to a NJL Carnival at the centre. High School Comp will be back on Friday, 15th June with Primary School Comp on Saturday, 23rd June.
The NSW Country Basketball Under 12 Skills Days are designed to offer players from Country NSW associations the opportunity to receive expert coaching to develop their skills to the highest possible level. The coaching program concentrates on individual skills that Under 12 players should be able to master before they graduate to the next age group making them ideal for players of any standards
CHBA is working with the Office of Sport to remind everyone about the importance of ensuring juniors have a positive environment in which to enjoy their sport. Next week is SHOOSH for Kids week. B grade competition has been split into teams finishing 1st - 4th after the regular rounds into B Grade semis, the teams finishing 5th to 8th after the regular rounds in the B Reserve Grade for both competitions.
Good luck to all our junior teams, coaches and referees this weekend who will be participating in the finals on Friday night and Saturday. If you can come down to watch and them cheer on please do, we'd love to see you.

CHBA have made the decision that parents/care givers are not be on the courts or in the grandstands for the trials. Please feel free to sit in the foyer area if you need to remain at the centre. Coaches are not to be approached during the trials, if you have any questions, our rep co-ordinator Leisa will be available at the commencement of the sessions at the payment desk.
CHBA are currently in the process of updating their Representative Rules and Regulations in line with Basketball NSW guidelines and by-laws. This will be updated as soon as possible.
Due to the National Men's Roller Derby Championships being held at Sportz Central this weekend there will be no High School competition on Friday night or Primary School Competition on Saturday. BNSW have brought in some new regulations for coaching accreditations for 2018 and beyond. Please see attached information. We encourage all coaches to obtain their Club Coach Certificate or update their accreditation to the Association Level Coach.
CHBA is joining the Statewide SHOOSH for Kids campaign. Please remember to keep your comments positive at junior sport. Let's keep our kids playing sport. REMEMBER: it's their time! We want to ensure that the experiences of all kids, officials and spectators are positive.
Our wonderful Aussie Hoops program starts again tomorrow morning at 9am. This Learn to play Basketball program is for all kids 5 - 12yrs. Only $80 for new players for the 6 week program which includes a ball, singlet and backpack. $60 for returning players. Give us a call on 66511452 for more information.
Due to a National Judo Tournament on Saturday, 21st October, we only have access to the back courts for this day. We have prepared the draw with games starting at 8am and last game at 6pm.

On Thursday 7 September 2017 Jason Mayer was involved in a terrible truck accident that saw him having to be airlifted by Westpac Rescue Helicopter to John Hunter Hospital. Please read on to help support this wonderful family.

The Coffs Harbour Suns 2017 Representative Presentation Night will be held on Saturday, 9th September at Sportz Central from 5pm till late. Fancy dress theme with prizes for the best dressed team. CHBA would like to announce that the AGM which was scheduled for Tuesday 28th March at 6pm has had to be rescheduled.
The new date for the AGM will be Wednesday 26th April at 6pm at Sportz Central. This date will ensure we are able to meet the statutory requirements in our constitution.
Unfortunately we have had a number of instances this season that have breached both the player and parents Code of Conduct and our Zero Tolerance policies. As such, we felt it necessarily to remind all of these codes and the consequences of failing to follow them.

Due to the severe weather, there is a water leak in the roof at Sportz Central that is leaking directly onto the circuit board and mains power.
Due to this, the stadium management have turned the power off, evacuated the centre and it will remain closed for the rest of today. The situation will be reassessed tomorrow

Our CHBA Development Officer Blake Kelly will be running High Performance training open to all Representative players in the Coffs Coast region wanting to learn new skills and take their game to the next level.
The 2017 Summer High and Primary School competitions are kicking off on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th February with the hugely popular round robin games. Each team will play 3 x 20 mins games against 3 different teams. To ensure your team is involved, we will need to get you to nominate your 2017 teams.
The season proper will commence on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th February
The 2017 Summer Men’s and Women’s competitions are kicking off on Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th February. To ensure your team is involved, we will need to get you to nominate.

On the weekend of 18th and 19th November CHBA held a fundraiser day for Make-A-Wish Australia by asking our players to come along for their final games of the season with their craziest socks and hair. We had some amazing efforts on the day.

Coffs Harbour Basketball Association has been approached by the Sportz Central Management this morning in regards to the condition of the floors at Sportz Central. Due to this, and on advice from the flooring experts, management have opted to strip back and resurface the floors as a matter of urgency.
The stadium will be closed from Thursday 28th July until Tuesday 2nd of August at 9am.

This is a great oppurtunity for all Mid North Coast coaches to have access to a high level coach, and coaching course. It will come with official BNSW and BA Club Coaching Course qualifications.

The July school holiday break is not far away, and CHBA have released dates for both Domestic and Rep training sessions. CHBA Development Officer Blake Kelly will be conducting two Domestic sessions on both the Tuesday's in the break (5th & 12th). The Rep days will be the Wednesdays (6th & 13th).
The sessions will be focused on skill, fun and tournament play.

The June long weekend is always an annual highlight on the calendar of junior basketball teams, with the NSW Country Championships taking place over the 3 days. This year saw Coffs Harbour send two of its CPL Men’s teams with the 16’s & 14’s travelling away to compete with the best teams NSW has to offer and hopefully bring home the first championship from this tournament in a decade.

The Easter long weekend saw CHBA's Lachlan Mihai travel to New Zealand with his parents to take part in the annual Pacific Rim Basketball Tournament as part of the Australian team selected from ACJBC in Albury in January.

This April School Holidays CHBA will be running both a Rep and Domestic clinic. The rep camps will be both Tuesday's of the holidays on the 12th and 19th of April. While the Domestic camps will be on the Wednesday's the 13th and 20th. These days will run from 9-3 and will are coached by Development Officer Blake Kelly and Rep coach Travis Slater.
CHBA will hold its Annual General meeting at Sportz Central in Bray St. Coffs Harbour on Wednesday 30th March 2016 commencing at 6.00pm.
In 2016 the BOM Nominations are up for elections are for the positions of President and one Director.

BNSW have announced the dates for the 2016 U14 and U15 TAP (Basketball NSW Talented Athlete Program) Trials. The trials are open to players who were born in 2002 and 2003.
Coffs Harbour will be hosting one of the regional trials on Sunday 21st February from 9am to 2pm.

The Coffs Harbour State League Men's side will be having a pre-season game vs the Grafton Vikings on the 12th of December at 6pm.
This game will be an exciting event for all of the family to enjoy. Fun, competitions, dancers, raffles, prizes, and a bar will all be on offer for the night.

The 2015 Winter domestic competitions are drawing to a close as of Friday 27th November with the High School competition having their semis and finals.
Saturday 28th sees the semis and finals for the Primary School competition and Men and Women have their semis the week of 1st December and finals the week of 8th December.

You do not have to be taking part in the Spring Development or High Intensity program to be eligible to trial.
Registrations will be open on the CHBA website early next week. Keep an eye out for this.
After consultation with associations across NSW, Basketball NSW are in the process of updating their Junior League By-Laws in relation to player movement between associations.
Once this confirmed, CHBA will post the amended by-laws on to the website.

CHBA is proud to announce the U16 Women Head Coach for 2016 Women is Laurie Van Loo. Laurie brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this age group. Laurie will be supported by Lynda Martyn in the Assistant coach role, Lynda has coached in the women's program previously and is a welcomed addition back into the CHBA coaching team.
We are currently calling for the vacant positions of 2016 Division 2 Coaches. Applications open today 2nd November and close on 18th November
The successful applicants for Division 2 will be announced on Thursday 19th November and will be posted on the CHBA web site.
This Saturday sees the teams in funball, 3/4 boys and 5/6 boys playing a double round due to missed games earlier this term.

Queensland Regional Basketball has fantastic way of enjoying the long weekend in a brink of spring. Every year they invite teams from different regions to participate in a competitive game of basketball to be played at beautiful spots within the state. Yusuf Qaafow will be in Coffs Harbour again this Thursday 31st September running 2 small clinics for both beginners (9am to 12pm) and more advanced players (1pm to 4pm). Cost is $40 per person with a maximum 40 in the beginner session and 30 in the advanced session. Payments are to be made in cash on the day.

CHBA have opened up coaching applications for the Division 1 2016 representative teams.

CHBA have secured the services of 2 highly skilled development officers for Term 4. Robert Linton and Yusuf Qaafow will be employed with CHBA to take over the Holiday Camps, Spring Development, High Intensity and school development programs.
On Tues 22nd and Wed 23rd September, CHBA will be holding a 2 day holiday camp. Run by CHBA Development officers, Robert Linton and Yusuf Qaafow, it's sure to be a great camp. Cost is $50 per day per person, or $90 if you book in for 2 days and pay upfront.
The 2016 Country Tour Trials are being held in Newcastle (boys) and Maitland (girls) from Friday 25th Sept at 6pm to Monday 28th Sept at 12pm.
In previous, CHBA have had as many as 20 kids selected to attend the ACJBC and CDT programs from these trials.

Saturday 20th June sees the Beachside Radiology Coffs Harbour Suns hittting the courts of Sportz Central after a long break against the Tamworth Thunderbolts. This is the first of 3 weeks in a row of home games for the girls, so get along to Sportz Central tomorrow, Sat 20th June at 5pm to see all the action and cheer on the suns!! GO SUNS!!

With the Queens Birthday Long Weekend this weekend, there will be no Primary School competition or Aussie Hoops on Saturday 6th June. These will be back on court on Saturday 13th June for the last round of competition before the finals on Saturday 20th June at Sportz Central.
The High school competition on Friday 5th June will still go ahead as normal.
Coffs Harbour Beachside Radiology Suns drove across the mountain range to meet Tamworth at the Tamworth Dome for a double header on Sat 16th May and Sunday 17th May.
Tonight, Wednesday 27th May, there is still Men's competition on as normal.
In previous years we've not had competition on State of Origin nights, but after receiving feedback that players would like to still play, we've made sure to have competition.

Over the past month, CHBA have had 2 players vying for a spot in a NSW Country U16 team. Yesterday we found out that both players have been successful in their pursuit of this goal.
Congratulations to Serena Waters (U16 Women) and Mitch Mihai (U16 Men) on their successful selection into their respective U16 NSW Country teams who will travel to Tasmania in July for the U16 Nationals.
With all of the CHBA domestic competitions having started in the last month, the monumental task of creating the full season draw in each competition and division is now complete.

Due to the ongoing concerns of our members and their families CHBA has made the decision to cancel all games for Friday night High School (20th Feb)and Saturday Primary School (21st Feb) competitions. The duty of care of our members faced with adverse weather forcasts and road safety, school closures and general safety concerns of our members has been considered.
The CHBA BOM have been advised that all catholic and private primary and high schools in the Coffs Harbour area are closed tomorrow due to the weather that is expected. Due to this we have had many queries about Friday night comp.
A decision will be made in the AM of Friday 20th February and posted on the CHBA website, depending on the weather.
Due to a representative preseason carnival in Gosford this weekend, our normal association volunteers that are usually here to help collect the fees and answer any questions that people may have will not be here to assist.

The 2015 Coffs Harbour Basketball Association Primary Competition has commenced with the pounding of basketballs and stampede of feet. The atmosphere was exciting and there were smiles on many a player’s face as they commenced a new season of games. Teams from all over the region of Coffs Harbour have gathered at Sportz Central to test their skills, learning the game and have a great time.
Due to lower than normal team nominations, it's been decided this afternoon to postpone the start of the High School competition.
We have only had 11 teams nominate across all 4 grades, with only 7 of these teams ready to start this week. We are still waiting on the 2 biggest schools team nominations along with the Wildcats teams, due to the start of the school year.
Today we say farewell to our General Manager Steve Smith. Steve has moved on to greener pastures to spend more time with his family and in particular his new grandchild. The CHBA would like to extend their thanks to Steve for his hard work and dedication to basketball in Coffs Harbour. We wish him every success in his future endeavours.

The victorious Suns Greenhouse Tavern State League Women have received a further acknowledgement of their 2014 season with a nomination for the Coffs Harbour City Council Australia Day Sportsperson of the Year Award.

Crossfit Park Beach have shown themselves one of the teams to beat during the Greenhouse Tavern(GHT) A grade men's competition this season and asserted their supremacy with a 47 to 33 victory over Emerald Beach Pasta & Pizza in last night's grand final.

The minor premiers in all three grades of CHBA women's competitions added to their list of achievements in the Greenhouse Tavern winter competition by adding "grand final winners" to their "minor premiers" tag.
And so it comes down to this. Twenty nine men's teams across five divisions have huffed and puffed up and down the court for 16 weeks and in the process dropped a fair bit of perspiration. This Wednesday night, five will be crowned champions when CHBA stage the Greenhouse Tavern Men's Grand Finals.
OK we're basketballers, we can't help ourselves sometimes, we want to jump higher, run faster, lift heavier and if there's a "record" well of course we would like to see if we can beat it.

Only last week the basketball association paid on your behalf, just short of $13,000 to Sportz Central for October court hire, almost $6,000 to Basketball NSW in registration payments, and more than $3,000 to our referees.
With the 2015 CHBA Representative teams having been announced, CHBA are holding their uniform shop next week to enable all players to get their uniforms ordered. Being held on Tuesday 9th, Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th December, families are invited come in and try on their uniforms and place an order. Staff will be here from 4.15pm to 5.45pm each day. The school 'bragging rights' for supremacy in Primary School basketball have been split between Bishop Druitt College, St Augustines, Mary Help of Christians and St Francis Xavier, when CHBA held its Primary School Competition Grand Finals on Saturday.
John Paul College may not field the number of teams that they once did in CHBA High School competitions but with winners trophies in four out of the six Grand Finals last Friday, it's clear that the basketball traditions run deep and strong.

Almost 80 FunBallers attended a presentation at Sportz Central last weekend to mark the end of an enjoyable and successful seasson. CHBA had tow special guest presenters on hand to assist with the presentation of medals and certificates.

UPDATED: The A grade women's competition has been using Stadium Scoring for three weeks now, and the stats speak for themselves. The traditional paper scoresheets have been replaced with touchscreens which upload scores and fouls automatically to the website.

CHBA is a not-for-profit organisation and aims to set its fees and charges to cover all of its operating costs and generate a small surplus to prevent insolvency. Recently, on three occasions the association has been able to refund its customers when program budgets have been exceeded
The clock is ticking on the Sun's 2015 State League program. The outcome of meetings held in Sydney last weekend to decide the dates and format for the BNSW State league competitions for 2015 have not yet been announced and the jury is still considering its verdict of the participation of CHBA teams.
After long deliberations, the 2015 Junior Representative teams have been selected. CHBA have selected 14 junior teams for the 2015 season.

After three years as the active 'behind the scenes' organisers of the club, they are getting ready to hand over the reigns to the next group of interested parents who will lead the club into the future.

CHBA's Spring Development Program targeting potential 2015 Junior Suns got underway this week. Players and Coaches are being given a chance to tune up their knowledge and skills under the guidance of some our best and most experienced coaches. If you missed last week, it's not too late to join in.
Mark Watkins, the BNSW National Intensive Training Program (NITP) Head Coach will be conducting a NCAS (National Coaching Accreditation Scheme) course to accredit coaches as "Club Coach" next Sunday At Bankstown Basketball Stadium.

Reminder CHBA Spring Development Program (SDP) kicks off first week back from holidays for aspiring U/12, U/14 and U16 & U/18 Suns for the 2015 season or those looking to develop there skills. Cost is only $30 for the six week program.
The SDP is targeted at both boys and girls.

Saturday 11th October will be a compulsory training day for ALL Saturday beginner referees.
Referees will be required to be at the stadium from 8.30am to 2pm and will be required to be in full refereeing uniform. The day will consist of training both on and off the court.

Last weekend saw the Under 12 men team travel to Newcastle and Maitland for the NSW State Championships. The team met their first metro opponents (North Bears) on Friday evening.
This Saturday 8th August, the CHBA Pink and Blue ball programs will be run together at 12pm at Sportz Central.

Coffs Harbour 14 Men went into their last weekend of representative basketball with many injured players and dug deep to finish their season with pride says coach Connie Woods.
The Coffs Harbour Suns U16 Girls were one of only two genuine country teams in the final 8 of the NSW State Basketball Championships in Terrigal last weekend.
The Greenhouse Tavern Coffs Harbour Suns remain unbeaten after 10 games on the State Basketball League following a 70 to 53 win at Sportz Central today.

The Coffs Suns U16 Boys headed to the finals in Grafton after finishing third in the competition proper.
Sportz Central will play host on Sunday to a double header State League program with both the SL Men and SL Women taking on the strong Newcastle Association.
The men take to the court first at 10.00 am with the women featuring at 12.00 noon.
Former Coffs Harbour Wheelchair Basketballer Bill Latham has recently added to his medal tally as a prominent member of the Australian Wheelchair Men's Basketball team the "Rollers".

CHBA's Winter High School and Primary School competitions had a big and successful first week last Friday and Saturday at Sportz Central.
Close to 500 boys and girls had great fun thanks to a "Blitz" formula, which saw them playing several shortened games instead of their normal one competition match.

CHBA's Primary and High School competitions got underway last Friday and Saturday and the new round robin format was well received by all teams. Lots of games, lots of referees and lots of fun was a feature of the day, and thanks to the band of keen CHBA volunteers, players were able to pay their season fees efficiently.
The first trials for the 2014 Future Stars program were conducted last week, but it's not too late to join. The Future Stars program is about identifying those players aged 9 and 10 this year, who display the potential to participate in the Suns U/12 Reps in 2015. Players must be born on or after January 1st 2004 and have not been part of the 2014 CHBA representative program.
CHBA President Justin Baldwin has announced that the Association has secured the services of Steve Smith as their General Manager, effective immediately. Smith's appointment follows a public advertising campaign and an interview by a sub-committee appointed by the Board.
Coffs Harbour Basketball are holding open trials for the 2014 Future Stars program. Trials will be open to all CHBA registered players who were born in 2004 and 2005, with the exception of players who were members of the 2014 U12 CPL or NL teams.
The trials will be held on Wednesday 23rd July and Wednesday 30th July.

Congratulations to Kristy Wallace who has won the Basketball Australia Junior Female Player of the Year 2013 in Melbourne this weekend. A wonderful send off for Kristy, a former Coffs Harbour Suns player, who heads stateside in August to take up her point guard scholarship with Baylor University.
The Suns men inflicted serious pain on the Tamworth Thunderbolts last Saturday, defeating the Thunderbolts 78-73. Playing perhaps their best game of the season,the Suns strength and determination were tested by the Tamworth team who are currently 2nd on the ladder, while the Suns are in 4th.
The Sun’s women continued their total dominance of the State league,with a 78-33 win over a struggling Tamworth Thunderbolts. Travelling with just 5 players, the Tamworth girls were never in the game and the outcome was never under question. All Suns players contributed to the scoring, but import Ashley Buis topscored with 29 and Jessi Reeves put in 21.

The Directors of CHBA have submitted a tender for the management rights for Sportz Central following the announcement that existing managers Sports Rite would not be renewing their contract. With access to Sportz Central a vital part of the operations of CHBA, the Directors believe securing the management rights will be a beneficial situation for both CHBA and Sportz Central.
With the current season winding down towards the finals, CHBA are opening up nominations for the 2014 Winter Competitions in all divisions.
Nominations for the Primary and High School competitions close on Saturday 21st June, whilst the senior competitions close on Friday 4th July. Comps start the week of Tuesday 15th July.
