Sepak Takraw
About Sepak Takraw
Sepak Takraw is a ball game originating from Asia. It combines the teamwork of volleyball, the dexterity of soccer and the finesse of badminton. The word "sepak" is a Malay word meaning to kick, while "takraw" in Thai means rattan or cane ball.
In the past the Arafura Games Sepak Takraw tournament has drawn huge crowds, enthralled with the skill and flair of the players and 2009 promises to be even better.
The game is played by two opposing "Regus", teams with two or three players each, on a court separated by a net similar to badminton. It begins with the service, executed by a ball toss from one player to the Server. The players then try to beat their opponents inside three contacts, using only their legs and heads.
Spiking is the most dramatic move in the game for spectators, as players become acrobatic and air borne to power the ball down into the opposing team's court.
Sepak Takraw has been contested in the Arafura Games since 1993 by club, company, regional, youth and national teams from Brunei, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Australia. The Sepak Takraw tournaments provide a high level of competition that allows teams and individuals to learn, improve and compete in an atmosphere of good sportsmanship.

If each "Regu" wins one set, the game will be decided in the third set called "Tiebreak" with 15 points unless the point is tied at 14-14. The set will then be decided on a difference of two points, up to a ceiling of 17 points.
