Boomers v China: When I grow up ...

Last night saw our Bulleen Boomers WNBL team take on the Chinese National Women’s team in a friendly game as part of the current China tour of Australia.

A fabulous crowd turned out at the Veneto Club to witness an international class match on our back doorstep in Bulleen. And while both teams were not at full strength, it was still a fast and furious game, with some of the low post action demonstrating that all the girls were in it to win it. And the crowd were also treated to some great 3 point shooting from Chinese stars Bian Lan and Miao Lijie, who can pretty much land them from anywhere in the front half of the court.

In the end, China held out the Boomers to win 78 – 60, but our girls were far from disgraced and matched it with the Chinese team for most of the game.

Sharin Milner, Elyse Penaluna and Lisa Pardon certainly all showed their class on the court and were more than able to match it with their opponents. This was also a fantastic chance for coach Tom Maher to give Bulleen Juniors Olivia Deana, Lauren Pearce and Lauren Jeffers some valuable court time and chance to experience international level basketball.

New Boomers recruit and former Bulleen junior Hanna Zavecz also showed that she will be a fabulous additional to the roster for the upcoming season with her pace and athleticism.

Anna Crosswhite and Kylie Reid are back again this season to provide strength off the bench, while Zoe Carr and Marita Payne completed the roster last night for the game. With Desi Glaubitz and Liz Cambage sitting out for the night, there’s lots to look forward to at Boomerland for the 2009/10 WNBL season.

On behalf of the whole Bulleen Club, we certainly thank the Chinese National Women’s Basketball team sincerely for taking the time to come and play at Bulleen, we very much enjoyed your visit.

And after the game, a few of our U16 and U18 girls got to meet Wei Wei from China – standing at 207 cm tall (or 6 foot 9 1/2 inches) … well, you can see the pic below (Ed: and I can tell you for comparison that my redhead in the middle there is just over 6 feet herself).
