AFL SELECTION ROUND 16: RENOUF, WHITE RECALLED

AFL SELECTION – ROUND 16

Thursday, 16 July, 2009

RENOUF, WHITE GET SENIOR RECALL
Gold Coasters Brent Renouf (pictured) and Jesse White have won a recall for Round 16 of the Toyota AFL premiership, but GavinUrquhart has fallen to injury. David Armitage is hanging on final selection – again.

Renouf, a 2008 premiership team member, will play his 9th game of the season and his first since Round 12 as Hawthorn face a Saturday night crunch game against Collingwood at the MCG, while White returns for his 12th game of the year and his first since Round 13 as Sydney takes on Carlton at Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Urquhart, who has played 14 of a possible 15 games this year, missing one through illness, has surrendered to a groin strain and will miss North Melbourne’s Sunday clash with Richmond at the MCG in which Daniel Pratt is set to return from suspension. He was bracketed on an extended Kangaroos interchange bench.

Armitage is among the 25-man St.Kilda bench squad ahead of the unbeaten competition leaders’ Etihad Stadium clash with Adelaide on Sunday, but after seven similar selections earlier this season failed to produce an AFL opportunity he won’t be holding his breath.

Completing a largely uneventual night for Quenslanders in Round 16 selection, Brad Miller was unable to force his way back into a Melbourne side which has won two on the trot, being listed as an emergency, while Brendan Whitecross suffered a similar fate with the Hawks.

In major selection news across the League, Geelong stars return en masse, Brett Burton is every chance to return for Adelaide, Heath Scotland is back for Carlton but Nick Stevens isn't and Geelong’s Jimmy Bartel, Collingwood’s Josh Fraser, Adelaide’s Tyson Edwards and West Coast’s Dean Cox are the big injury outs.

Essendon stuck with a winning formula and were unchanged for Friday night's clash with the Bulldogs, who also went with the ‘no change’ sign despite losing by a point to Collingwood last week.

Carlton made three unforced changes, including Scotland, Paul Bower and Chris Yarran rewarded for his efforts in the VFL.Dropped were Dennis Armfield, Adam Hartlett and Jeff Garlett. Stevens will spend his third week in the VFL.

Jarrad McVeigh returns from injury to join White in bolstering the Swans , who will debut  Dan Hannebery. The 17-year-old was drafted at No.30 in 2008 and gets his shot at the elite level despite remaining in Melbourne to complete his year 12 studies at Xavier College. Jared Crouch, Paul Bevan and Luke Ablett have been dropped.

Geelong made six changes for Saturday's home clash with the Demons after a seven-goal loss to Brisbane. Gary Ablett, Matthew Scarlett, Andrew Mackie, Travis Varcoe, Cameron Ling and Darren Milburn return, but Bartel, who survived a Round 15 booking, is out with a hip injury. Nathan Djerrkura was also not considered due to a corked thigh. Mark Blake, Ryan Gamble, Jeremy Laidler and Tom Gillies were omitted.

Melbourne recalled Clint Bartram to replace Daniel Bell, who will miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury.

Cameron Wood earned another chance at Collingwood after Fraser was ruled out with a knee injury, while Nathan Brown returns in place of Sharrod Wellingham (omitted).

Renouf gets his chance after Hawthorn lost Robert Campbell to injury, while Ryan Schoenmakers replaces the injured and Rick Ladson.

Fremantle coach Mark Harvey, hosting Brisbane at Subiaco on Saturday night, resisted the urge to swing the axe despite a 117-point thrashing at the hands of the Crows. Clayton Hinkley and Ryan Murphy, the side's only goal kicker last week, have been dropped while Byron Schammer is out with a calf injury. Included were Andrew Foster, Clancee Pearce and Adam Campbell.

Brisbane welcomed the return of Jared Brennan from suspension and recalled Bradd Dalziell after a long injury lay-off followed by four weeks in the reserves. They replace replaces the injured Jed Adcock and Matt Austin.

Port Adelaide dropped high-profile pair Josh Carr and Peter Burgoyne following their loss to Melbourne. Travis Boak was slotted straight into the starting 18 after injury, while Matthew Broadbent, Nick Lower, Matt Thomas and Nick Salter are on an expanded bench.

West Coast recalled forgotten ruckman Mark Seaby to replace Cox in what will be his fourth game of the season, while Nic Naitanui, Ryan Davis and Tim Houlihan are on a seven-man bench.

Richmond lost Kelvin Moore to a calf strain and included Mark Coughlan, Jordan McMahon, Adam Pattison and Jarrod Silvester an extended bench.

North added Pratt, Ben Ross, Aaron Edwards and Leigh Adams to their squad for the battle of the caretaker coaches between Darren Crocker and Jade Rawlings.

St Kilda dropped Ben McEvoy and named Armitage, James Gwilt, Steven King and Adam Schneider on a seven-man bench.

Burton was included in the Crows’ squad for what could be his first AFL game since Round 15 last year. Richard Douglas, Brodie Martin and Phil Davis also were added after Edwards was left out due to hamstring soreness.
