It is very easy to start refereeing! All you need to do is attend one of the Apprentice Referee Courses through the season. You can be any age to attend one of these courses, however you have to be turning 12 years old to get onto a court with a whistle.
Before you do an Apprentice Referee Course, you need to purchase a whistle from the Mackay Basketball Office. Then, the following Saturday at the U10's competition, you borrow one of the special GREEN referee shirts & you can referee your first game! Don't worry, you won't be responsible for your first few games, you will simply have to run along behind your shadow, watching where they go & what they call. But once you are comfortable with that, you will be able to start refereeing with your shadow watching you & then eventually on your own, with an experienced referee as your teammate!
Then, as soon as you get the opportunity, you go to a Community Referee Course. This helps you to understand more about your refereeing! From there you continue to referee by yourself, growing in knowledge & confidence. However, you are never alone, always with another referee & with a referee coach somewhere in the stadium to support you if you need it. We are a team, so we look after each other!
After you have gained a good understanding of the game, the calls to be made & the position you move to & once the referee coach thinks you are ready, you can go to a Development Referee Course. If you complete this course & pass the exam (which, by that time, is quite easy for you) you lose the GREEN referee shirt & gain the privilege to wear a GREY referee shirt which you purchase from the Mackay Basketball Office.
From there the options are ENDLESS!! You can continue refereeing higher & higher levels of basketball, with more exciting & faster games. You could go to a State Championship as a referee. And eventually, you could even become a NBL referee!
