Introduction to BVABA

Welcome to the game of Basketball and thank you for supporting your local basketball association. We hope you enjoy your time playing in this association, and to help things along we have produced this information sheet to assist you and us.

Apart from organising basketball in the Barossa area we also try to encourage player development to help them learn about the game and so increase player enjoyment in the game. Coaching and training material is available from the Basketball Office and the association will organise coaching and training clinics with development officers from Adelaide (provided we have at least 10 people interested).

Management

Each club has a committee to oversee its operations. They in turn appoint delegates to the Association who have a say in setting the objectives of the Association. The day to day  running of the Association is carried out by an Executive Committee  elected at the Annual General Meeting. A part time paid Administrator is employed to carry out some of the work to keep the Association going, however volunteers are still required to assist in the running of the Association and its Clubs.

Nomination/Team sheet

Each team must have a contact person listed on the nomination/team sheet. Please submit your nomination/team sheet by the set date, to ensure that the draw can be completed and forwarded to you (this process can take up to 3 weeks), with full details for any new players. Any new player(s) gained during a season can be added to the scoresheet, with full details recorded on the reverse.

Fees

Players who play in this association are registered with SA Country , Basketball Australia, and are insured through SA Country (NB Insurance cover is safety net only). Player fees per season charged by the association vary from time to time, and current fees can be checked on our  website. Clubs charge additional amounts to cover expenses such as training time, uniform hire etc.  Payment of fees are due by the third round of the competition, and now with GST, delays cause problems with the Association’s cash flow so please pay your fees on time. If teams do not pay their fees they may not be allowed to play.

Bench Officials

Each team is required to provide personnel to perform scoring duties (1 for the clock or for the scoresheet). This association uses the FIBA running scoresheet and FIBA scoresheet summary. The first named team is required to complete the scoresheet, and the second named team is required to operate the clock. If a team fails to provide a scorer, there is a 5 point penalty imposed.

Forfeit

The Forfeit Policy is as notified on the Noticeboard outside the Basketball Office and on the website. If you are unable to field a team for any reason and advise the association with more than 48 hours notice (excluding weekends) a Notified forfeit fee is payable to cover cost of Court hire etc. Less than 48 hours will incur a higher fee as referee and other costs are incurred. Notification should not be made to the Basketball Office, as it is unlikely t o be received in a timely manner, but directly to the Umpire in Charge.

Uniforms

Teams are required to be in correct uniform by round 4, if you are having problems with the manufacture or delivery of uniforms you can seek an exemption from this rule.

Results etc.

Results for games are placed on the notice board (between the 2 courts) each week as well as made available to The Leader, The Herald, The Sunday Mail, BBBFM, and published on the internet on our own web-page as below.

Referees

Referees are part of the game and we could always do with additional referees, so if you would like to referee please talk to referee-in- charge for your night for more details.

Umpires in Charge

Each night has an umpire-in-charge whose responsibility it is to ensure rosters for referees are prepared (ideally one week in advance), provide a communication between Association and teams, critic the referees performance during games, ensure scorers know how to score or use the clock, and recruit and train new referees.

Carnivals

To raise money the association runs two carnivals (Junior and Senior) with teams from around the state competing. Teams from the Barossa Association are required to help run these carnivals.

Representative Basketball

The Association enters teams in SA Country Championships (both Senior & Junior), BASA State Club Championships, our own carnivals, and other carnivals from time to time. Interested players are invited to contact the junior or Senior Co-ordinator for more details on participation. Finally if you have any problems firstly talk with your referee-in-charge. If they cannot help you, submit your problem in writing to the committee and/or come to a committee meeting.
