Season 1974
THE BIRTH OF THE SJFL
Extract from the Editorial, Sunraysia Football Guide
August 3rd, 1974
To provide added incentive to junior players the
unaffiliated junior competition which formerly comprised
eight Under 14 teams has expanded its activities by introducing
Under 13 and Under 15 competitions, both comprising 10 teams.
All have an abundance of players and to overcome its isolation,
Robinvale has created a junior competition, which is also
operating most successfully.
Anyone associated with football will appreciate that junior grades
are the lifeblood of any adult competition, so it is pleasing to see
such a keen and dedicated band of football enthusiasts
successfully controlling the junior competitions in Sunraysia.
Although the junior league enjoys outstanding support from
local clubs and umpires, there is always room for improvement,
and any assistance or incentive offered to either an individual
junior team or to controlling officials will not be gratefully
accepted but will be prudently utilised.
Both Premiership Teams earned the title Premiers and Champions
as neither team incurred a defeat throughout the season.
Mildura won the first Under 15 premiership and the
Shell Shield
by defeating Imperials, 10.4 (64) to 4.11 (35).

Saints, playing in the St Kilda colours of red, black and white,
fielded teams in the Under 15 and Under 13 grades in
1974 and 1975 with the majority of players coming from
Gol Gol and Buronga, topped up with a few players
from Mildura. In 1976 the name of the club was changed
to Alcheringa.
High School teams wore guersneys of gold with blue trim
and sleeves with an emblem of MHS on the front.
Millewa guernseys were blue with white trim.
Coomealla teams played in guernseys of navy blue with white
trimming, in the style of Carlton.
Cardross fielded a team in the Under 13 grade for seven years,
from 1974 to 1980.
The colours of the club were purple with gold trim.
Bulk Amounts of Bouquets
Written by Peter O'Toole
Having experienced involvement in junior bodies in other
parts of the State and knowing the anguish and disappointment
such involvement normally entails, it is so refreshing to come
to an area where the sporting pursuits of our little people
are looked upon not as the responsibility of a handful of fanatics,
but rather a communal enterprise of enormous proportions.
