This was the last year that High School teams participated in
the SJFL, the reason being that it was attempted to have
all teams affiliated with a Senior Club.
At the SJFL meeting of 30th April, Robinvale JFC reported
that it was finding it hard to field an Under 15 team.
At the same meeting Gordon Casey spoke on the need
to promote junior football because of the inroads
soccer and basketball were making.
By letter dated 29th May 1984, Robinvale advised that it
could not fill an Under 15 team for the remainder of the season.
The John Groves medal for the best player in the
Under 15 Grand Final was introduced.

SJFL Report by Peter O'Toole
18th August 1984
A month ago I expressed in this column my concern re how
dinkum or otherwise we are in our approach to our
responsibilities as junior football educators when with three
Sundays (our SJFL finals series) available to us, we shut
up shop for approximately 700 kids.
At that stage the final four in the U13's was Irymple on top,
followed by Red Cliffs, South Mildura and Merbein.
The U15's saw Imperials, High School, Wentworth and
Merbein making up the four. The only alteration after the final
series was Merbein replacing Wentworth in the U15's.
Maybe the soccer approach to arriving at a premiership team
has more merit than the final four system we presently adopt.
A WEIGHTY LOSS
Newspaper headline Sportsman will depart.
Read on and find out, with a start;
Its Brian Weightman, we are going to lose,
For local sports thats not good news.
Junior sports especially, will feel the blow,
Because no matter where they had to go;
Brian was there to smooth the way,
Make sure things went right for the day.
He put in lots of time at talking sessions,
Was able to gain some big concessions;
Gave help and advice to all who sought,
Went far above duty for any sport.
Timekeeper, umpires, help with the wicket,
Winter for football, summer for cricket;
While doing all this he made many friends,
Spanning the age group from both ends.
How much we will miss him we've yet to find out,
But it won't be the same without Weighty about;
We are lucky to get a good replacement so early,
So good luck Brian and welcome Neil Hurley.
