Australian football was first played in Alberta in 2002 with the formation of the Calgary Kangaroos club. After several years of participation in inter-provincial tournaments, the Kangaroos were joined by the Red Deer Magpies, Calgary Bears and Edmonton Wombats to establish a vibrant local league. Since then both the Calgary Kangaroos and Edmonton Wombats have gone on to flourish, with three metro teams now established in both cities.
Alberta footy teams have enjoyed success at inter-provincial and national levels with the Calgary Kangaroos also wining Division Two of the USAFL National Championship tournament in 2009. A total of six men from Alberta were selected to represent the Northwind (Team Canada) team at the 2014 AFL International Cup in Melbourne, Australia so come and learn the game from some of the country’s best!
