Academy Masters are responsible for all Academy trainee's activity onboard and ashore and apply also to the academy resorts on the Murray. You must comply with the requirements of the Academy Master. This is part of Academy discipline and ship safety at sea. As a trainee, you must comply with ship discipline.
The Captain's Hat - represents authority and discipline: Academy provides "Training" as different from "Education" which no doubt will be incidental along the way. Training at the Academy level provides disciplined experiences designed to develop high-quality performance. You can expect the Academy Master to demand it. Everyone is capable of delivering high-quality performance when they know what is expected.
The Captain's Hat is a symbol of the ultimate authority within Academy. Trainees are expected to comply with the requirements of the Academy Master who has charge of the Captain's Hat.
Cruise ship living arrangements: No matter what your background, chances are the living arrangements are different from anything you have experienced. You will be living for considerable time on a cruise ship or in student accommodation at our resorts. Cruise Academy living arrangement is designed to build safe close friendships and develop trainees as well ordered, tidy, immaculately presented, fit young people with a very clear understanding of the qualities required for leadership in a wide field of endeavours.
Watches: You stand watches as part of an 8 member watch team, attend to rostered Academy spaces maintenance chores, share meals and wash, iron and wear smart uniforms for almost everything you do. Your watch gains Merit Points for all your personal outstanding performance. Demerit Points are awarded to your watch for your personal substandard performance (eg clothing that is not in proper order or a bed space that is not "squared away" or late arrival for commitments etc.). You must keep your clothes and personal space in shipshape condition at all times. The Watch Points system is maintained by the Academy Masters.
Allocation to your Watch: At the welcome dinner when you start your program you will be allocated to one of the watches "Out of the Captain's Hat". The 8 member watch teams are the most important units of Academy lifestyle. Many of your most rewarding experiences at Academy are those you share with members of your watch. You eat, study, play and compete as teams with your watch mates. You learn to trust and rely on each other. The watch experience also gives you an idea of how things work in the industry, where small-unit cohesion, teamwork and morale are important.
The point score for each watch team is counted and recorded each week by Academy Master. Watches compete for the title, "Colour watch", the best of Academy. The semester-long colour competition among the watches is one way the Academy spirit is built. This is a team competition and not an individual competition. The whole team must build a winning performance.
Watch members accumulate Merit Points for their team:
- excellence in and commitment to fitness
- physical skills development both work and recreational,
- academic performance,
- attention to personal presentation and
- professional attention to watch duties.
Watch members can also incur Demerit points for their team as a result of substandard performance in the list above.
The watch with the most aggregate points for the semester will be awarded "Colour Watch" at the end of semester dinner.
Personal Berth Space: It is critical that all trainees feel safe in their bed and their work environment. Academy promotes two share cabins located on the Academy deck or at the resorts which are only available to academy members and ship's officers:
- To make the best compromise cost of valuable accommodation space and
- To assist in maintaining wellness through sharing experiences with a buddy.
On enrolment, trainees are allocated personal berth space including a locker and a berth with shared use of the bathroom facilities in a standard two share cabin. Licence to use this personal space is totally given to a single person and must not be violated in any way without the permission of the berth owner. Use of the bathroom is a cabin group responsibility and must be a well-negotiated shared facility (use and maintenance). Violation of this trust, both exclusive and shared, is a "Yellow Card" event.
Passengers and general ship's crew are not permitted on Academy deck.
Academy Living Fee discounts are available for 3 or 4 share cabins on enrolment.
Premium Living fees are payable for single occupancy cabins if available on enrolment.
There are no specific rules about gender share in a standard two-person cabin. Trainees may request their preference. Partnerships are recognised. Seek Academy Master approval and be prepared to present your genuine relationship which, with counselling, will be formally recognised and arranged if possible. Effective couples are usually good team members.
Conflicts in close living sleeping and working arrangements can become irreconcilable and are best resolved by separation. Personal space and/or watch teams may be renegotiated at the beginning of each semester or earlier if necessary.
Optional changes are offered to members in order of seniority. The principal, in consultation with the Academy Master, may reallocate berths and change watches if the need arises.
You must keep your personal space ready for inspection at any time. Demerit Points are awarded to your watch for a personal space that is not in proper order or "squared away". Where possible, under age 18 trainee accommodation on the ship will be located near the Academy Master's cabin for their personal guardianship.
Your personal berth space has no relationship to your watch team.
Dining: Dining and other common Academy spaces are used by all Academy members. Watch teams are rostered to tidy common Academy living spaces and assist with meal service times. This duty is outside of the normal ship's voluntary real work training experience roster time.
