AFL Sydney are on the look out for umpires for season 2017.
If you love footy, or just sport in general you’ll love being an umpire. Not only do you get the best view of the action, you also get paid for the privilege. It helps keep you fit, you get to be part of a team and you can learn leadership skills that you can take with you when you walk off the ground. They call it a job, but really, whether you’re a field, boundary or goal umpire, it might just be the most fun you can have at work.
With pay rates ranging between a minimum of $40 for goal umpiring an Under 19 Division Two match, to $150 as a Premier Division field umpire, along with bonuses for training attendance and availability, umpiring in Sydney is a great way to earn some extra money whilst keeping fit, meeting new people and taking on new challenges.
Games are located from Manly to Wollongong, Penrith to Bondi and everywhere in between, so there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. Umpires are kept at grounds close to home where possible to minimise travel time and expense.
Our arrangements are flexible, working around school, work and university to ensure you get the most out of your umpiring. We provide you with the coaching and support you’ll need to get started and develop, including weekly training sessions to help with your fitness and skills. Plus, there is also the opportunity to climb the ladder, and maybe one day walking on to the Sydney Cricket Ground or Spotless Stadium to umpire an AFL game.
There are three ways to get in the game:
Field Umpiring – these are the men and women in the middle making all the decisions around free kicks and managing the game. Similar to a referee in soccer or rugby, they are ultimately in charge. Perfect for anyone who likes to be in the thick of the action and knows a bit about AFL.
Boundary Umpiring - for those who like running and being on their feet, boundary umpires are responsible for judging when the ball goes out of bounds and helping the goal umpires with crucial score decisions. A great starting point for anyone who may not be familiar with AFL or looking for another alternative to field umpiring.
Goal Umpiring – the umpires who receive the most camera time making the big decision on wether it was a goal or a behind, goal umpiring is less physically demanding than field or boundary umpiring but still allows you to get right in the thick of it. Perfect for any experience or fitness level.
