PNG Athletes at Iowa Central Community College

PNG’s three athletes at Iowa Central Community College in the USA have hit the ground running as the Indoor Track season got underway  at the Iowa State University in the city of Ames. Sharon Kwarula was in great form clocking 9.06 seconds in the heats of the 60m hurdles and then running 8.93s in the final which was a big improvement on her best time last year of9.15secs . Teammate Wala Gime ran 8.44 in the mens 60m hurdles compared to his best 2012 time of 8.71secs.  Cecilia Kumalalamene ran 3min 06.79 seconds for the 1000m race, just outside her best time last season but three seconds faster than her time at the same competition in 2012.  Meanwhile Sapolai Yao was also in action at the same meet competing for his Northern Iowa  College, running 16min and 02.83 seconds for the 5000m. Coach Curtis Vais was very pleased with Yao’s effort , which entailed running 25 laps on the 200m track.

Yao is expected to be in action again this weekend at Mankato, Minnesota along with his PNG team mate Paul Pokana who arrived last week. The Iowa Central athletes will be competing at Cedar Falls, Iowa at the University of Northern Iowa.  The Indoor track season continues through February and reaches its climax on the weekend of March 1 and 2 with the National Junior College Championships at Lubbock , Texas. The athletes will then turn their attention outdoors, with the first meet at Grand View Des Moines on March 23
