First women's coaching clinic launched in Majuro
The first-ever women’s basketball coaching clinic held in the Marshall Islands started on Friday, November 16, 2012 in Majuro. The Marshall Islands Basketball Federation is running coaching clinics for men and women in alternating morning and afternoon sessions during the visit by Australian national team Coach Paul Goriss of the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.
The ground-breaking women's clinic is providing participants with four days of four-hour-per-day intensive classroom sessions coupled with on-court practical work. The Marshall Islands Basketball Federation's aim is for the women's coaching clinic is to improve play of local girls and young women by developing coaching skills among elementary, high school and community league coaches. Although basketball in the Marshall Islands has historically been dominated by boys and men, it has become increasingly popular with young women particularly since the first two Marshall Islands national women's teams won medals in Pacific regional competition in the early 2000s (bronze and silver). The women's program continues to build, and has also benefited from Marshall Islands girls who have played on their varsity high school teams in the United States and return to play at home.
Women participants said the clinic with Coach Goriss has been an eye-opening learning experience for them. This week's women's coaching clinic alternated between classroom work and on-court practical sessions on day one, with women coaches getting hands-on practice on footwork and skill-building drills in order for them to be better able to teach players who they are coaching. The coaching training for women runs from November 16 through November 20, 2012.
The sessions are being held at the College of the Marshall Islands, a co-sponsor of the program.
The clinic is organized by the Marshall Islands Basketball Federation in partnership with the College of the Marshall Islands, National Olympic Committee, Ministry of Internal Affairs and FIBA Oceania (Australia).
