Marshall Islands basketball on Radio Australia
Marshall Islands basketball was featured live on Radio Australia Friday November 23, 2012. The talk show interview highlighted the recent women's basketball coaching training run by Coach Paul Goriss of the Australian Institute of Sport, and basketball in RMI generally.
Radio Australia “Pacific Mornings” host Heather Jarvis interviewed NOC Secretary General Terry Sasser, Marshall Islands Basketball Federation Secretary General Deborah Shoniber and national basketball team player Antoinette Langmos live on the sports section of this daily show on Radio Australia. It was carried on FM98.5 in Majuro.
On Wednesday of the same week, Radio Australia's Pacific Beat show had interviewed former MIBF Secretary General Giff Johnson on various topics, including news about Coach Goriss' presence in RMI to lead the men's and women's training programs. The Radio Australia "Pacific Mornings" staff heard the item about the clinics and rang up to arrange an interview focusing on the MIBF having sponsored the first-ever women's basketball coaching clinic and its other activities.
Friday's show focused on the previous week’s basketball clinic run by MIBF with Australian Institute of Sport national coach Goriss, which included the first women’s coach training session.
Sasser said the success of the basketball clinic showed what could be accomplished when multiple agencies and organizations worked together. He mentioned the collaboration of FIBA Oceania, the Australian Institute of Sport, College of the Marshall Islands, Ministry of Internal Affairs, the NOC and MIBF.
Shoniber said while in the past, girls were reticent to take up the “aggressive sport” of basketball, this has changed and popularity among girls is skyrocketing. The Basketball Federation was encouraging more girls and young women to get involved in coaching as well as playing, she said.
Langmos praised Coach Goriss, saying the clinic, which she attended, was a great learning experience for all participants. She Asked by "Pacific Mornings" interviewer Jarvis what message she has for girls who might be thinking about taking a shot at playing basketball, Langmos said: “If you want something, don’t wait for it to come to you. Sometimes you have to step outside your comfort zone and go get it.”
