Coach Tom Newell visits Laura High School
Coach Tom Newell and US Ambassador Tom Armbruster spent Monday afternoon, January 7, at Laura High School — talking to students, making a donation to the school and running a clinic for both boys and girls.
Following completion of a 9am-12noon session with coaches in the Level 2 Basketball Coaching training Monday, Coach Newell joined Parliament Speaker Donald Capelle and most of the members of the parliament for lunch at the government complex following the opening of the January session of of parliament earlier in the morning. Immediately following lunch, Ambassador Armbruster and Coach Newell made the one-hour drive to Laura High School.
US Embassy official Andrew Zvirzdin commented that it was a "very good day in Laura. The coach was a hit with the kids."
The Marshall Islands Basketball Federation provided two cases of fresh oranges for the students, and Andrew noted that "the oranges were gone in 5 minutes."
Following talks with the entire student body, and with the basketball and track teams (both boys and girls), Coach Newell put on a one hour clinic with the boys and girls basketball teams, running the players through a variety of skill-building drills.
