Marcelina Mete stars for the Barrett Thunderbirds

The Barrett Thunderbirds top the Matoa Women’s T20 Super Series ladder, after defeating the Vanuatu Post Stars and Ridgway Dolphins on the opening day of the competition last Saturday.

In the first match, Vanuatu Post Stars won the toss and put the Barrett Thunderbirds into bat on a beautiful day at Independence Park. The decision seemed to be a master stroke with the Thunderbirds slumping to 3/14 after four overs. Johanna Sokomanu joined her Barrett Thunderbirds captain, Marcelina Mete to get the innings back on track. After hitting three magnificent fours, Sokomanu (12) fell when the score reached 30. In deep trouble, the Thunderbirds needed to put on a partnership to post a respectable score. Leimauri Chilia joined Mete and slowly got the score ticking over. They frustrated the bowling with some clever running between the wickets and power hitting to put on 97 runs for the fifth wicket before Mete was bowled by Messi Atisson for 39. Chilia continued to pile on the runs and made a mature 40 before being bowled by Belinda Chilia. The Barrett Thunderbirds eventually made a very impressive 8/181 off their allotted 20 overs thanks to some power hitting by Selina Nipiko who made an unbeaten 32 runs in as many balls. Belinda Chilia was the chief destroyer with the ball taking an impressive 4/24.

The Vanuatu Post Stars’ innings mirrored that of the Barrett Thunderbirds, slumping to 3/11 in two overs. The Stars never really recovered from that position and were bowled out for 100 in the 16th over. Elu Chilia was the main contributor with the bat for the Stars making an impressive 28, while Rayline Matautaava made a patient 17. The wickets were shared among the Thunderbirds’ bowlers with Leisoko Masauvakalo (2/14) and Johanna Sokomanu (2/26) the only multiple wicket takers.

‘This was a great result by the girls,’ said an elated Barrett Thunderbirds’ captain, Marcelina Mete. ‘The girls dug in really hard during our batting and were very consistent with our bowling. We are all very excited to play in the Inaugural Matoa Women’s T20 Super Series.’

In the afternoon match, the Barrett Thunderbirds batted first against a very strong and excited Ridgway Dolphins outfit. Unfortunately, the Thunderbirds were not able to reproduce the batting performance from the morning game, being dismissed for a disappointing 93. Leimauri Chilia (21) and Marcelina Mete (33) were the main contributors with the bat for the Thunderbirds. Alvina Chilia (2/23), Edna Mansale (2/16) and Mahina Tarimiala (2/23) bowled superbly, but the outstanding bowler for the Dolphins was Michelle Knowler who finished up with 3/13 off four overs. The Ridgway Dolphins got off to a flyer putting on 29 for the first wicket, before slumping to 4/44. Mahina Tarimiala (28) got the innings back on track and was in cruise control needing another 18 runs to win with six wickets in hand. Then the match turned on its head when the Dolphins lost the final six wickets for eleven runs in the space of 7 overs to give the victory to the Thunderbirds. Marcelina Mete was the main destroyer, taking the first five wicket haul in the tournament to finish up with 5/16.

The Matoa Women’s T20 Super Series continues this Saturday 10th November 2012 with the Vanuatu Post Stars taking on the Barrett Thunderbirds in themorning match, while the Vanuatu Post Stars take on the Ridgway Dolphins in the afternoon match. All matches will be played at Independence Park.
