The Fiji hockey teams had no time to celebrate the New Year with families and friends as they trained for the World Hockey League in India next month.
Both the teams had two training sessions on Tuesday which impressed the team management. National women’s coach Shaun Corrie says the players only had 12 days to rest after the Oceania Games last month and got back to business straight after Christmas.
“It is good to see the commitment of the players,” Corrie said.
“Everyone have been attending training and this is a good sign. We produced a positive result during the Oceania Games and it was through the dedication of the players to be Oceania champions for the first time. We want to continue that winning trend.
“We just can’t afford to go for a break at this time knowing the challenge ahead.
“The tournament in India will not be easy as we will be battling tough teams so we need to prepare well.
“We have to maintain our fitness, work on our ball control and polish up our basics before we head to India.
“We hope to maintain this consistency.
Corrie says hockey for women in Fiji is on track.
“But we need to set up proper structure and try to develop the sport further.”
The teams will also be doing fundraising to help them get to India.
“We need your help as we need money to go to India,” Corrie said.
