John Ah Tong aims to do his best at the World Hockey League next month.

The 19-year-old believes the road will be tough playing top teams in Asia.

“We did well at the Oceania Games and we need to step up in India,” Tong said.

“I have faith that we will be able to do well and we just have to play our best and improve our ranking.”

The Fiji men’s are ranked 71st in the world and are pooled with hosts India (11th), China (18th ), Ireland (15th), Bangladesh (40th  and Azerbaijan (38th)

The women are ranked 59th and has been pooled with Japan (9th), India (12th), Russia (20th), Malaysia (22nd) and Kazakhstan (33rd).

Tong is a sports academy student at Marist Brothers High School and is one of the youngest players in the team.

Coach Hector Smith says Tong is the fittest player in the team.

“I’m always impressed with his performance,  he is the fittest player in the side and this shows his dedication and sacrifice he has towards the sport,” Smith said.

“He is one of our key players and is our number one drag flicker.”

Smith said the midfielder always show consistency when playing.

“Tong is a very determined player and he always shows that when he plays.”

Tong acknowledges Fiji Hockey Federation for having faith in him.

“I thank Hector, my teammates and Fiji Hockey for their support.”
