Women

Tamara Sheppard and Claire O’Bryan made sure Lightning swept past the Tracy Village Jets for the fourth consecutive time this season as they combined for 54pts in the 67-42 Lightning win. The clean sweep of minor round games against the Jets was set in motion in the third quarter when Sheppard (29pts) and O’Bryan (25) scored all of Lightning’s 18 points during a 18-5 run that pushed their lead out to 48-30 with one quarter to play. Tara Carroll (9) sparked a Jet run in the last quarter, hitting 7pts, but the challenge fell far short of expectations as Lightning cruised to their 11th win of the season. With only 4 rounds to go Lightning are definitely in the driver’s seat. Tikesa Docherty-Cole hit a team high 13 for the Jets.

Jaylene Bonson hit a game and team high 28 as she led the Uni Rebels to a convincing 83-58 win over Ansett. Jamie Lee-Peris also figured large in the scoring department for the Rebels as she dropped in 26, 15 in the second quarter when she hit all but 2 of the Rebels output. Sam Drescher led the way for Ansett as usual with a team high 22 in a losing effort. The Rebels set up the win with a 26-18 first quarter and then added points through the remainder of the game, denying the Blues any chance of recovering. The win gave Rebels a 3-1 edge during the minor rounds against the Jets and sets up a big game next week v Lightning.

Ladder: Lightning 11-2, Uni Rebels 9-4, Tracy Village Jets 6-7, Ansett 4-9, and Eagles 2-10

Next week: 6:15pm – Uni Rebels v Lightning 7:45pm – Ansett v Eagles. Jets have the bye

Men

Ethan Kennedy paved the way for the Uni Rebels 92-75 win against Lightning with 33pts as the Rebels scrambled to come from behind for the victory. Trailing Lightning 17-10 after one quarter due to the good shooting from Evan Browne (24), Marcus Robinson (30) and Tom Leonard the Rebels tried to get back into the game, but Lightning continued their good form and matched the Rebels 27 each for the second quarter and led 44-37 at half time. It was a third quarter turn around for the Rebels that finally got them in front. With Kennedy still firing away, Michael Konanec Jr.(17), Chris Baldwin (11) and Marcus Ch’ng (20) stamped their marks on the game with added scoring as the Rebels outscored Lightning 29-12 to take a 10pt lead 66-56 into the last quarter. They never looked back as they went on a 26-19 run to put the game on ice.

Second placed Ansett put the Tracy Village Jets away 75-56 after a strong second half effort from Colin Matteson (15), Rashad Chase (19) and Matt Hunt (13). The Jets trailed by a single point 34-33 at half time with Travis Ellis (22), Michael MacLean (8) and Danny Miller (7) all finding the range, but the wheels fell off in the second half as the Jets could only manage 23pts to Ansett’s 41. A third quarter 24-12 run led by Matteson and Hunt put the Jets behind 58-45 and seemingly without an answer for the firepower of the Blues. The Jets will have to win at least 3 of their last 4 games to make the playoffs or they will be out of the Championship Season final four for the first time since about 1994!

The Eagles flew past the Razzle 97-54 after a searing 18-3 first quarter led by Matt Smith who finished with a team high 24 for the birds. Another dominating quarter, the third (20-7), pushed the Eagle advantage out to 58-31, giving the green and gold no chance to get back into the game. A strong showing in the second quarter led by Ross Vasic (11 of his game high 28) gave some hope, but it was quickly extinguished after half time. Three other Eagles hit double figures: Bobby Guyton (15), Shane Harrison (12) and Jay Niven-Trewin (11).

Ladder: Uni Rebels 12-1, Ansett 11-2, Eagles 10-4, Warriors 6-6,Tracy Village Jets & Lightning 4-10 and Razzle 0-14

Next week: 6:15pm – Ansett v Uni Rebels, 7:45pm - Tracy Village Jets v Razzle, 9:15pm – Eagles v Warriors. Lightning have the bye
