NEW BADMINTON CLUB PROPOSAL
Badminton Southland Committee are working on a project to create a new club in Invercargill and enhance the club competition for the 2013 season and beyond. The following sets out the current situation and our aims for the future.
If you think back to Badminton in the 1990's, there were 5 clubs operating out of the badminton hall and another three in greater Invercargill area. It is time we did something big and bold to boost Badminton in Southland. We now have a world class badminton hall and a world class coaching program for juniors, so the next step is to cast our net wider and focus our collective effort to improve Badminton for club players/social players and those outside the junior coaching program.
At present we have 2 clubs operating in Invercargill, Masters and All Saints. Masters is for players over 35 and All Saints takes on new members aged 13 and over and is currently near its maximum capacity. The only other club that currently exists, is the midweek social club that operates on Tuesday mornings at the Surrey Park badminton hall.
All players that are playing in Badminton Southland or Badminton NZ organised events need to be registered members with an affiliated Association. A player could either affiliate to a club or bypass a club and affiliate direct to Badminton Southland.
No interclub competition has been played for a number of years and the current “interclub” format caters mainly for known players.
Many junior players do not have a connection with any club and miss out on the social aspect of badminton.
With the ability to affiliate direct to the Association, a significant number of players (especially juniors) have chosen not to join a club and clubs have been marginalized over the years and many have closed, leaving the 2 clubs mentioned above - we can't let this trend continue.
We have had an influx of mainly junior players over the past 3 seasons yet the existing clubs are not in a position to take on these players as members. These juniors have no attachment to the sport through a club system which provides encouragement, a social atmosphere and more importantly a belonging.
Interclub lacks interest if there is only 2 clubs, hence it has been abandoned.
Competitive badminton is lacking at a local level, even local Southland Championships are now reduced to Open and Age Group tournament, gone are the days of ability based championships for B, C and D Grade players.
From the 2013 season it becomes mandatory for players to affiliate to a club. Affiliating direct to Badminton Southland will not be possible.
A new club should be established in Invercargill which can cater for the extra players who do not want to or are unable to affiliate to Masters Club or all Saints Club. This club would be based at the Surrey Park Badminton Hall on a day and time that meets the needs of its members.
We need 3 or 4 people to show an expression of interest to be the founders of a new club. Mentoring will be provided to assist in the successful establishment/running of the club.
The new club would run a weekly evening session for club members to come and play games and also organise and enter teams into the interclub competition.
This new club would be open to all badminton players, regardless of age or ability and would suit a family membership.
We can run a more meaningful interclub competition over a range of grades.
Club membership will increase.
Being a club member increases the social aspect of badminton and in turn keeps people in the game.
