2013 JUNIOR COMPETITION & CHANGES TO U10 FORMAT.

JUNIORS – 2013

Rockhampton Touch Association will again be conducting a junior competition in the first half of the year for divisions – Under 10s boys and girls; Under 12 boys and girls; Under 14 boys and girls.

The games will be held on Friday evenings commencing at 5.40pm.

Nominations will be called in the new year and the start date for competition will be Friday 8th March, 2013.  Nominations close 1st March.

CHANGES TO U10 COMPETITIONS

From the start of 2013, the Under 10 competitions (boys, girls {and mixed in season 2}) will see a major change in format of a normal full size field with 6-a-side. To bring us into line with TFA Junior Policy and to align with State tournament rules, Under 10s competition games will be held on half field 5-a-side.

The reasoning behind this decision is as follows:-

Games previously played on full size fields in this age group saw a vast majority of teams play in a style that was not conducive to fast development of basic touch skills. In some teams, some players hardly had the ball in their hand at all during a game. We saw a major number of cases where a team would, time after time, give it to their “fast” player to run around the opposition and score. This method of playing is not beneficial to anyone – not the attacking team and certainly not the defending team. Even the “fast” player was learning nothing other than to run.

It has been proven over the years that having five players in a smaller space will force children to better learn the skills and benefit of good rucking, quick accurate passing, building pressure and  momentum, using all players and better use of the field available.

Our U10 development program has always been based on half field games because the JSC (and therefore our rep team) uses this format. You can clearly tell which players have been involved in this process over the years as their skills will show out above those who have not.

This format will be used for the Under 10 competition from 2013 and another benefit will be more games being played in the same timeslot and therefore shorter mornings for the Saturday competition.

We are happy to hear your thoughts on this decision. Please email admin@rockytouch.com

Admin – Rocky Touch.
