A First For New Plymouth U17 Basketball!

In an unprecedented performance from our NP U17 basketball teams at the recent zone 3 premiership tournament held in Napier last week, both the women’s and the men’s teams made it to the Grand Finals!

Both teams had to face the local sides, Hawkes Bay women’s and men’s teams, in the final – with a very vocal group of home supporters packed into the Pettigrew Green arena.

The NP women endured a very physical game against their opponents, eventually being beaten 63-56 in a match that was anyone’s up until the last few seconds of the game.

The NP U17 men’s team went through the entire tournament without a loss. Winning their pool sent them straight through to the final, where there was another nail-biting finish with NP managing to hold onto their lead, eventually closing the game at 68-64 against Hawkes Bay.

Both teams will travel to the U17 Nationals tournament in Tauranga in early June to compete with the other top teams in New Zealand. NPBA congratulates both these teams and their coaches (Linda Giddy and Willie Banks) for their achievements and wishes them well at Nationals.
