Kia ora koutou. Talofa lava. Greetings from the Wellington Basketball Association Executive Committee (ExComm).

  • President: Kenny McFadden
  • Vice President: Veronica Thompson
  • Committee Chair: Hugh Lawrence
  • Executive Committee Members: Matthew Eagle, Cathy Freear, Gino Tempongko, Bernice Williams, Murray Young

As you know, the new committee took up its role at last December’s AGM. Since then, we have actively reviewed existing practices, policies and procedures, and set up new systems aiming to improve operational efficiency and better service delivery.

Below is a record of the key actions resulting from our first three meetings. We will post monthly highlights and major news items throughout the year. We trust you find this useful.

The following highlights refer to the Wellington Basketball Association (WBA) Executive Committee meetings held December 2012, January and February 2013. The highlights are provided in the interests of transparency to keep the Wellington basketball community informed of work undertaken and progress made by the Executive Committee (ExComm).

  • ExComm now receives regular and comprehensive financial reporting
  • Costs are now tightly controlled and good progress is being made in recovering outstanding debts
  • Further work on budgets is ongoing as ExComm seeks to make all programmes cash flow positive. Financial targets for the year will be set over the next month.
  • As part of the cost control programme, the Operations Manager contract has been terminated
  • A part-time interim Administration Officer will be put in place for 20 hours per week for approximately three months
  • Once cash flows are established, a full-time manager will be appointed at an affordable cost
  • Good progress has been made with the first 2013 leagues with 54 teams entered
  • The referees working group is making good progress on a development and appointments programme for 2013
  • ExComm agree portfolio allocations for 2013 (see table below). Members will develop new terms of reference for each portfolio, taking into account the findings of the 2012 ODT Review.

2. Personnel Updates at WBA

  • Haere ra, Tofa soifua. Following eighteen months of dedicated service to the Wellington basketball community, the WBA Executive Committee farewells Salo Taufale from his role as Operations Manager. The Executive Committee wishes to thank Salo sincerely for his energy and efforts, and extends its warmest wishes to Salo for his future endeavours.
  • Interim Appointments.
    • As you are aware, Colleen Ross was appointed in January as Interim Leagues Commissioner. The Executive Committee is grateful to Colleen for getting the WBA leagues and competition year under way in such an efficient and positive fashion.
    • The WBA Executive Committee warmly welcomes Bill Eldred to the position of interim Administration Officer for the Association. Bill has been engaged to undertake administrative duties for twenty hours per week through until May 2013 when a full-time manager will be appointed. Bill brings to his new role many years of basketball knowledge and the Executive Committee is pleased to have his expertise and support.

 3. Forthcoming Meetings

  • Special General Meeting. Scheduled for 6.00 p.m. Tuesday 12 March, this meeting will be held for the Association’s membership to formally approve the WBA’s 2011-2012 audited accounts. Venue: Matairangi Room, ASB Stadium, Kilbirnie.
  • Community Gathering. On the same evening and following the business of the Special General Meeting, the WBA ExComm wishes to host a short information-sharing forum with the membership. Our idea is to update you on ExComm activities, to exchange news with the membership – and to invite input and feedback. Further details to follow.
