VALE Peter Bennett
Victorian Water Polo sadly advises the passing on 4th July 2012 of Peter Bennett aged 86 years.
Peter was a life member of Melbourne Collegians Water Polo club and was a superstar at all levels of water polo....National, State and Club. He was selected in 3 Olympics - 1948 (but withdrew due to illness) and was Captain in 1952 and 1956, played at 1 Empire Games and 46 International games, and was a member of Australiam teams for over 10 years.
He represented Victoria on 10 occasions, played countless interstate matches and coached Victoria teams for more than 8 years.
In April 2012, Peter was inducted into the Australian Water Polo Hall of Fame., a wonderful recognition for his contribution to the sport.
His commitment to and record at the Melbourne Club (now Melbourne Collegians) was no less impressive. Peter joined the club as a promising junior swimmer in 1937/38.….the next generation of a Bennett 'Family Dynasty' which started at the Club with Horace Bennett in 1904. All in all, the Bennett Family had 10 members spanning three generations, swimming and/or playing water polo with the club.
Peter was junior club captain from 1942-1944 and senior club captain in 1958, played and/or coached the club's A Grade teams for 17 years and was involved in no less than 8 Melbourne A Grade premierships between 1949 and 1963.
He was awarded Life Membership of the Melbourne Swimming and Water Polo Club in 1954-55.
Peter's sporting prowess was not limited to water polo. He also played 102 senior games for the St.Kilda Football Club, headed their goal kicking list on numerous occasions and gained Victorian selection in 1950, 1951 and 1953.
Victorian Water Polo joins the Melbourne Collegians club in mourning the loss of one of the club’s and Victoria’s most water polo players.
