New season sees teams stay on form

New season, same old story in the AFL Cairns Women's League. Last years's grand finalists, North Cairns Tigers and Centrals Trinity Beach Bulldogs, kicked off their 2012-2013 seasons with convincing wins. Last year's strugglers Manunda Hawks and South Cairns Cutters were on the wrong end of lopsided scores. Defence set the tone for the top teams. Cutters did not register a point in the first quarter against the Bulldogs and had just three shots on goal in a 1.2 (8) to 8.5 (53) loss. On the attacking side it was Anne Mison leading the way for the Bulldogs, finishing with a team-high three goals. Lauretta Dowling was the only other player to score multiple goals as Centrals Trinity Beach showcased their diverse attacking options. The Hawks did not fare much better against the unstoppable Tigers, who extended the unbeaten streak that stretches back to the final regular season game of the 2010-11 season. The 6.9 (45) to 1.3 (9) scoreline indicated North Cairns has no intention of slowing down after finishing last season with an unbeaten record. Attacking weapon Maddie Peters started her season with a team-leading three-goal haul. Although the first game of the season might give little insight into what to expect, the next round could provide greater perspective when the teams switch positions and the Hawks take on the Bulldogs and the Tigers take on Cutters. If the favourites win then week three's grand final replay will be the one that everyone is watching.
