Being the inaugural clash with AFL Sydney, AFL Cairns will be looking to win on home soil. The side will be coached by Andy Viola, with Ian Willmott, David Arnfield and Jim Buckley assisting.
Port Douglas’ Even Hocking will captain the side, which features six other Port Douglas players joining him in the green and gold. Port Douglas are the most represented club, with South Cairns second with four players, including playing coach Chris Adams. Manunda Hawks and Cairns City Lions each have three representatives, while Cairns Saints, North Cairns and Centrals Trinity Beach each have two.
Cairns will look to win the ball out of the middle, courtesy of the competitions premier ruckman in Luke Powell, and get the ball forward to the strong, in-form Reece Poyner. Sam Boxall will support Poyner as a prominent target up forward, while 2010 Crathern Medallist Daniel Smith will be swooping on anything at ground level to put the score on the board for Cairns.
Paul Taverner, Matthew Harth, Brendan Tennick and Captain Evan Hocking will look to control the back half, as Cairns will look to run the ball quickly out of defence, using the wide open wings of Cazalys Stadium to their advantage with their fast leg speed.
Sydney boasts goal kicking arsenal in the form of their competition's leading goalkicker, Jamie Vlatko from East Coast Eagles, along with teammate, Stephen Doyle. With six other East Coast Eagles featuring in the AFL Sydney side, gelling together as a team is likely to come relatively easy for the New South Wales based team.
