CHARTER INDUCTEE 1990 JOSEFA LEVULA – RUGBY UNION.
Josefa Levula of Narewa, Nadi, was born on June 15 1930, and is still remembered worldwide for his outstanding exploits on the rugby field.
His name is still revered by rugby players and spectators alike. He is probably best remembered for his unorthodox high knee action, and his exceptionally long striding bursts down the sidelines of the famous fields on which he played when representing Fiji during the decade of the 50's.
In 1951, Josefa Levula attained New Zealand Rugby's ultimate honour that of being nominated as `Player of the Year'. The citation for this honour reads
"Josefa Levula is indeed a great wing three - quarter, we believe the world's best".
In addition to his rugby achievements, Levula had established a reputation as a fine track sprinter. Perhaps his finest performance on the track was his 9.9 seconds, 100 yards dash which won for his a silver medal in the Australian Championships in 1954.
Josefa Levula's fame took him to the United Kingdom where he saw his playing days out in Rugby League. He died in the UK in 1989.
FASANOC was proud to induct Josefa Levula, twenty two years ago in 1990, into the Fiji Sports Hall of Fame.
