Press Release 1

The XIII FIJI GAMES will be held from the 10-12th May 2013 at selected venues throughout Suva. All 40 affiliated federations of FASANOC have been invited to express their interest to participate in the Games.   It is compulsory for the 8 sports participating in the Pacific Mini Games 2013 to take part in the 2013 Fiji Games.

To ensure the Games are a success we need support from Federations.

The Objectives of the Fiji Games are to:

•  Provide an opportunity for competition for National Federations;

•  Identifying talent by inviting competitors from all over the country to take part in competition;

•  Give a final opportunity for National Selectors to select National Squads for Wallis and Futuna Pacific Mini Games

•  Help train technical officials in the various sports and provide an opportunity for sports to upgrade or establish recognised qualifications; and

•  Strengthen sporting networks in the country

An organizing committee , chaired by FASANOC Vice President Mr Reg Sanday, has been established to organize the Games. Other organizations such as the Fiji Sports Council and the Suva City Council have been invited to nominate representatives to the committee.

 The Fiji Games will be supported in part by a grant from the International Olympic Committee. In addition, potential sponsors are being invited to be partners in this gathering of athletes from all over Fiji. The Games are an important event in Fiji’s sporting calendar and also a stepping stone for sports people wishing to represent Fiji in regional and international competitions.

Competition brings out the best in individuals and its important that all sports identify talent from the districts and organize individual district teams to compete at these Games. It will allow athletes to benchmark their performance against Fiji’s best in their sport. Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals will be awarded to the top three place getters and the District that wins the most medals will be declared the overall winner.

Overseas teams and athletes are allowed to compete to raise the level of competition but they are not allowed to win medals.

The Games were first held in 1994 and the last one was held in Suva in 2010. Suva has traditionally dominated the Games but Mr Sanday said this should present a challenge for other districts to topple Suva from its perch. Suva based athletes will be allowed to compete for their districts or provinces of origin. As in the past some sports may hold their competitions outside Suva.

Comment Guidelines: The SportingPulse Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand. So play fair and have fun, and thanks for your contribution.
