Beijing Olympic hopeful Niko Verekauta maintained his impressive performance abroad when he won silver at the Australian Under 23 and Under 20 championships at the Gold Coast yesterday.

The former Suva Grammar School student and South Pacific Games gold medalllist showed that he is still in contention for a place in the Beijing Olympics after he finished second in the 200 meters final.

Verekauta stopped the clock at an impressive time of 21.21 seconds.

The New Zealand based athlete was also to have competed in his other event, the 400 meters but had to pull out of the race citing a slight hamstring problem.

Makelesi's Coach Lloyd way, who was on hand to support our Athletes, said that Niko was impressive in the heats clocking 21.55 and 47.59 respectively for the 200m and 400m races.

Verakauta and Copeland still have a good chance of qualifying for the Olympic Games in Beijing and this dream could become a reality should they continue with their winning form.
