New President for Tonga NOC for 2013-2016
The second part of the Tonga Sports Association and National Olympic Committee (TASANOC) 2012 Annual General Meeting and Electoral General Assembly was completed on Thursday 31st January with the election of its new and first female President, Lady Tu’ivakano, the wife of the Lord Tu’ivakano, the Honourable Prime Minister of Tonga.
The outgoing President, Lord Tupou thanked the delegates and the Assembly and congratulated Lady Tu’ivakano in her new role and challenge to take Tonga in the next four years. In reply, incoming new President, Lady Tu’ivakano thanked Lord Tupou for the all the years that he has involved with the Tonga National Olympic Committee and sports as a whole with the highlight of his sports career in securing the right for Tonga to host the 2019 Pacific Games.
There were more than 60 delegates from 26 National Federations (NF’s) in attendance and the meeting took about three hours to complete because of the election of office bearers for the Executive Committee for the 2013-2016 Olympiad.
There were also changes for the Senior Vice President, in which Mr Lennie Niit (Judo) replaced ‘Ahongalu Fusimalohi and three new Vice Presidents, Mr Hans E. Jensen (Archery), Mr ‘Epeli Taione (Rugby) and Mr Robert Sullivan (Touch Rugby). The former Treasurer of the NOC, Mr Michael Bloomfield (Weightlifting) also joined as Vice President with Mr Hasiloni Fungavai becoming the new Treasurer. Other Vice Presidents were Mr ‘Ahongalu Fusimalohi (Golf) and Dr ‘Amanaki Fakakovikaetau (Badminton).
The Athletes Commission representative is Siosifa Taumoepeau and the other representatives of Women-in-Sports Commission and the Ministry of Sports will be confirmed at a later date.
Mr Takitoa Taumoepeau was retained Secretary General so as the Auditor Mr Tiofilusi Tiueti.
The Assembly unanimously endorsed and made Lord Tupou a Life Member of the Tonga NOC for his exceptional contribution to the NOC and sports in Tonga.
