The Commission

The Commission and the Commissioners

The purpose of the Commission is to promote and protect the interest and objectives of Basketball Geelong and the Supercats.

In carrying out their responsibilities and exercising their powers, Commissioners will ensure they act honestly, fairly and diligently, in accordance with the law in serving the interest of Basketball Geelong and the Supercats and, where appropriate, the reasonable expectations of BG and Supercat members and stakeholders.

The Commission must act in accordance with the Constitution, the Deed of Delegation, applicable Acts and Regulations and any policies or other By-Laws it creates.  Further details about the goverance obligations of the Commission can be found under the Goverance section of the "About Us" tab on our website.

The Commission consists of 7 independent members, 4 of whom are elected by the Members (Elected Commissioners) and 3 who are co-opted by the Elected Commissioners. 

Term of office for Elected Commissioners is 2 years and for Co-opted Commissioners is 1 year.  The maximum number of consecutive years anyway can be a Commissioner is 6 years.

Chris Burrell (Chair)

Chris is the Managing Partner of Prosperity Legal Lawyers in Geelong. For more than 10 years Chris has provided advice to businesses on commercial and corporate advisory matters, workplace relations and dispute resolution. Chris’ daily activities focus on advising large private and publicly listed companies on mergers and acquisitions, takeovers, capital raising, corporate compliance and governance, and other complex commercial and corporate transactions.

Chris has held various board and committee positions for ASX listed companies and state government authorities during his career, most recently as a director of Barwon Health (where he also chaired the Remuneration Committee and the Audit and Risk Committee) between 2006 and 2011.

Chris was appointed as a director of Basketball Geelong Inc in 2010 and also sits on the Committee of 13th Beach Golf Club.

Chris has been involved with basketball from a very young age, and played representative basketball for Colac as a junior. Chris continues to play basketball in Geelong Basketball Division 2 men’s competition.

Braith Cox (Commissioner)

Braith Cox is a former Championship Captain with the Geelong Supercats and Championship player with the Melbourne Tigers. Braith holds one of the most decorated SEABL records, including 6 all-star selections & Australian Youth Player of the Year.

After retiring from Basketball in 2010, Braith joined the Geelong Football Club as Business Development Manager. Braith has degree in Business Management and is undertaking his Masters degree in Business.

Ian Sweet (Treasurer and Commissioner)


Ian is a Director of Davidsons Accountants and Business Consultants and is the director in charge of Internal Audit and Business Valuations.

Ian commenced at Davidsons in 2000 and has worked in Public Practice for 16 of the 31 years since he graduated from Deakin University in 1979. Ian spent 6 years as a CFO in the Health and Aged Care Sector, 2 years with Target in Management Accounting and 7 Years in the Finance sector in roles ranging from Internal Audit to Managing large lending projects.

Key specialisations include Business Valuations, Due Diligence and Business Succession Planning, Internal Audit and Risk Profile Reviews, Costing and Management Reporting.

Ian has been a director and the treasurer of Basketball Geelong since 2010
