Miners Cup 2016 set for May 8th
The Miners Cup, which has built a rivalry around the might of the BHP led Far North FL against the Union backed Broken Hill FL, will batlle it out for bragging rights on May 8th at the Adelaide Oval.
Matt Duldig, the Community Football Manager for SA Community Football League has confimed this week, after months of negotitaion, that the 9th and possibly final Miners Cup game will be played on Sunday May 8th prior to the twilight AFL fixture of Port Power hosting the Brisbane Lions.
Gaining access to the Adelaide Oval has become increasingly difficult each year as the AFL now has the final say on what, if any, curtain raisers are allowed. Add the significant cost to have the Oval opened 2 hours early and Duldig has flagged the possibility that this may be the final chance in the near future for the Miners Cup to be played at the Adelaide Oval. Both Leagues are keen for the game to continue on, but ultimately we may need to revert to our annual clash being a curtain raiser to a SANFL game or played alternate years in Broken Hill and Roxby.
For now its a green light for 2016 and we are delighted said Broken Hill Chairman Peter Nash. Both Leagues are working with a Major Sponsor to try and offset the significant cost of the venue which includes ground hire, bus and accommodation for a touring party of 35.
Both leagues will be going all out to win "THE DECIDER" as the ledger is all sqaure at 4 all after 8 years. In 2015 a much underated Broken Hill team, that was given no chance by sections of the local media, played the game of their lives to win a tough competive game 4-14 (38) to 5-5 (35). Brilliantly led by dual captains Marc Purcell and Eddie Morgan the local lads dug deep to secure a gutsy win; one that Coach David Rudduck will long remember.
By chance the Miners Cup falls on the Agfair weekend in Broken Hill and also the Mothers Day weekend. The Agfair Committee have been keen for footy to be scaled back to ensure the Community event is supported so atleast for this year we will be able to do that. All Saturday football will have the weekend off, however the Friday night Auskick draw has not yet been tabled.
The touring party will leave Broken Hill Saturday morning, stay 2 nights at the Adelaide Shores complex and return on the Monday. Game time on the Sunday will be around 1pm with four 18 minutes quarters. The Miners Cup game will finish one hour before the AFL twighlight game. Ticketing opportunites will be advised closer to the game.
Players are encouraged to make themselves available for selection for what may well be the last chance to play on Adelaide Oval in the near future.
