2013 Australia Day Tournament Wrap Up

Well another Australia Day Eltham Dandenong Tournament has come and gone.  This year saw 34 of our 35 teams participate on a much milder weekend than previous years.  We had 7 teams make it into Grand Finals with 4 of them taking home the champions trophy.
During the tournament, selected players were awarded a pennant for being the most determined player at one of the fixture games.  Players were presented with the award at the end of their match if a referee or venue co-ordinator saw elements of great team play, sportsmanship and having the passion for the contest.  The following Ringwood players received the award during the tournament:
Taylah Mihan – G12-2
Lara Karak – G16-2
Taylah Ramsay – G16-3

Congratulations to these girls for their efforts.

Here is a rundown of our how our teams faired over the weekend:

The 14/2 girls went into this weekend’s tournament with 9 players & lots of enthusiasm.
At the end of 6 games the win rate was zero, the injury count was 3 (one broken collar
bone, injured back & ankle), but lots of smiles & laughter.
They all tried their best & bonded together as a team.
Thanks to the parents & Peter (coach) for all their help in making this a fun weekend.
Sue Battersby – Team Manager

The Under 16/2 girls have had a great tournament making the semi finals only to lose by 2 points but winning confidence in their abilities to execute their skills and game plan. Like in most tournaments form was a little up and down with fatigue and injuries but they made every team they played bring their A game to beat us and I believe we have now a platform for a great season ahead.
Thanks again to everyone and congrats girls we are all proud of what you're doing with your basketball

A late game on Friday night saw us off to a shaky start but we came away with a 2 point win over Eltham 8.
An 8.00 am Saturday morning game resulted in another win defeating Whittlesea 21-14.
Game 3 saw another win, this time over Warrandyte 34-27.
Last game of the day resulted in a 5 point win over Eltham Saturday, 18-13.
Sunday morning we experienced our first loss, in a close game against Waverley. 24-26
Sunday afternoon we found our winning streak again, this time defeating Craigieburn 20-17.
With 5 wins and 1 loss our team cemented first position on the ladder.
Monday’s games started off with a semi-final against Waverley, resulting in a 1 point win.  14-13
Next game – Preliminary final against Eltham Saturday, with Ringwood coming away the winners (26-19)to secure a place in the Grand Final.
Grand final time and our opponents were Craigieburn.  Half time saw us down by 3 points.  The team regrouped and after a tough second half, came away with a 2 point win (32-30).
A champion effort by all players all weekend, but they dug deep when needed.
Our defensive effort all weekend never allowed the opposition any easy points and allowed us to play the game at our tempo.  Whilst we struggled to post large scores, we maintained good forward pressure to capitalise on any opposition errors.
By far, the outstanding player of the tournament was Sam Ntim-Doudo, recognised by the officials with a Grand Final MVP award.
Special note should also be given to Jared Purcell whose tenacity for the ball proved a spring board for many forward thrusts.
Congratulations to each and every one of the team.
