Club Affiliation Proposal - 2013

Touch Football Singapore (TFS) administration met with the members of a number of team members, coaches and national team selectors recently at the corporate offices of Hays Recruiting to present a proposal for a change to the 2013 league season.

The proposal centred on the ‘A’ division category and the national team pathway – with a requirement that clubs would need to become officially affiliated with TFS and a minimum of four clubs would need to be confirmed.

Each of the four or more affiliated clubs would need to commit to entering a minimum of Women, Men and Mixed Open ‘A’ division teams in the new season league.

The changes would mean the ‘A’ division player base would be condensed requiring any males and females that wanted to play in that competitive national team environment would need to join one of the proposed affiliated clubs.

The approach would mean that if players felt they could not make the ‘A’ division team at one club, could consider an alternative club and selections would be competitive.

This approach would compact the talent pool and make for a very competitive playing environment in the Open ‘A’ Women, Men and Mixed and guarantee a Men’s ‘A’ competition.

A clearer participation pathway could be highlighted to younger players and a more structured ‘club’ development pathway would evolve with more junior participation categories developing. Competition could be delivered for categories including 20’s and 18’s and Senior Men’s 35’s or similar categories may grow.

All the above national team playing categories will be available for TFS members to consider as we move closer to the 2015 World Cup in Australia in 2015.

With Singapore national teams slated to play test matches across all three open age categories including Senior Men in June 2013, this new approach to the most competitive season of the year from February to June or the Summer Touch League season is now being considered.

The proposal outlined the range of positive outcomes for all involved and detailed how both long and short term challenges could be better managed.

Should this new approach to the opening season be agreed by the general community and the four affiliated clubs (minimum) be achieved and come on board, the ‘A’ division women’s, men and mixed first half of 2013 will be a challenging 6 months.

The proposed changes are positive for Touch as a unique sport in areas such as player development; referee progression and education and will allow coaches a wider range of teams to become engaged with and this is only positive for the sport.

The formation of a General Club Committee comprising members of the affiliated clubs would follow allowing for collaboration and planning, along with decisions on policy and procedures that could be implemented.

The ‘new’ affiliated club season and proposed ‘A’ division competition would not affect the more social B and C divisions and TFS will be welcoming many teams new and old back for a fun season of social Touch both on Saturdays and Monday Night Corporate Touch.

With the regular international school season of Touch completed many are hopeful that boys and girls of all ages will look to Touch as a team sport, joining the many mums and dads and family members enjoying active participation as players, coaches and referees.
