Week 7 Women's SBL Wrap

THE Rockingham Flames, Willetton Tigers, Perry Lakes Hawks and Joondalup Wolves all cemented themselves as the top four teams in the Women's SBL in Week 7 action with the foursome having lost just the one match each so far in 2016.

The round's action began on Friday night with the Perry Lakes Hawks defeating the Schweigen Home Appliances East Perth Eagles 80-44 and the Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers beating the Print Sync South West Slammers 82-54.

Then on Saturday night the Lapa Brazilian BBQ Restaurant Cockburn Cougars beat the Textile WA Perth Redbacks 75-71, the Merriwa Tavern & Bistro City of Joondalup Wolves downed the Print Sync South West Slammers 105-67, the Lakeside Lightning prevailed over the Bethanie Stirling Senators 82-76 and the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames beat the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 84-51.

Following seven weeks of the 2016 Women's season the defending champion Orange Autos Rockingham Flames (7-1) sit atop the standings ahead of the Goodlife Homes Willetton Tigers (6-1), Perry Lakes Hawks (6-1) and Merriwa Tavern & Bistro City of Joondalup Wolves (5-1).

The Textile WA Perth Redbacks (4-3), Lapa Brazilian BBQ Restaurant Cockburn Cougars (4-5), Lakeside Lightning (3-4) and Kalamunda Eastern Suns (3-4) round out the top eight.

The Bethanie Stirling Senators (3-5) sit just outside ahead of the Mandurah Magic (2-4), Schweigen Home Appliances East Perth Eagles (1-7) and Print Sync South West Slammers (0-8).

The Team of the Week for the Women's competition includes four players from two teams. Jacinta Bourne and Sami Whitcomb have both been named from the Rockingham Flames with the Joondalup Wolves represented by Klara Wischer and Amy Kidner.

The fifth player is Louella Tomlinson once again from the Willetton Tigers.

Wischer was named to the Team of the Week for a second time in 2016 and also received the Player of the Week honours after 28 points, 15 rebounds, eight assists, three steals and three blocked shots in Saturday night's win at Joondalup Basketball Stadium over the Slammers. She shot 12-of-21 from the field.

Kidner was also named to the Team of the Week for a first time this season following 31 points, six rebounds and three assists in the same game while nailing 14-of-16 from the floor.

Whitcomb was named to the Team of the Week for a third time this season after 28 points, seven rebounds, six steals and four assists in Saturday night's win over the Eastern Suns.

Bourne was named to the Team of the Week for a second time after also having 25 points, eight steals, six rebounds, three assists and two blocks for Rockingham while hitting 10-of-20 from the field including 3-of-8 from beyond the arc.

Tomlinson was named to the Team of the Week for a fourth consecutive time following 24 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots on 10-of-17 shooting in Friday night's 28-point win over the Slammers at Eaton Recreation Centre.

There were plenty more star performers across the weekend as well starting on Friday night with the Hawks beating the Eagles by 36 points at Bendat Basketball Centre.

Antonia Edmondson top-scored for Perry Lakes with 21 points, five assists, four rebounds and three blocked shots.

Deanna Smith added 20 points, eight boards and three assists for the Hawks with Kate Anthony contributing 13 points, Lauren Jeffers 10, nine boards and six assists. Sarah Donovan also contributed eight points and 10 rebounds.

Jodee Sontay had a good night for the Eagles finishing with 19 points and nine rebounds shooting 9-of-15 from the field.

On top of Tomlinson's performance on Friday night for the Tigers, Zoe Harper finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds, Kate Malpass 10 points and four assists and Desiree Kelley nine points to go with six boards, four steals and two assists.

Dena English top-scored for the Slammers on Friday night against Willetton with 17 points while Courtney Bayliss adding 14 points and Raya Thompson 10.

Then on Saturday night against the Wolves, Bayliss delivered 32 points and seven rebounds for the Slammers including hitting 8-of-13 from three-point range. Thompson added 11 points, five assists and three boards.

The Cougars beat the Redbacks by four points in a terrific contest on Saturday night at Wally Hagan Stadium with Cherridy Thornton top-scoring for Cockburn with 26 points and 11 rebounds.

Candace Williams finished with 17 points, 22 rebounds and three steals despite seven turnovers and shooting 5-of-21. Nicole Roberts added 15 points for the Cougars.

Rebecca Mercer top-scored for the Redbacks with 19 points with Lisa Wallbutton contributing 14 points and 11 rebounds, Ajay Jones 10 points, Jess Jakens nine points and 11 boards, and Ashley Gilmore eight points, seven rebounds, four steals and two assists.

On top of Wischer's and Kidner's performances for the Lady Wolfpack on Saturday night, Nikita-Lee Martin finished with 18 points, six rebounds and four assists, Ellyce Ironmonger 11 points, 10 boards, four assists and four steals, and Shani Amos seven points, eight assists and six rebounds.

Courtney Byrnes had a strong performance for the Lightning in Saturday night's win over the Senators with 24 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Alison Schwagmeyer added 19 points, seven steals, six rebounds and five assists for Lakeside and Ashleigh Grant 18 points, nine boards, three steals and two blocked shots.

Taylor Bestry top-scored for the Senators with 21 points, five rebounds and four assists with Lyndal Gardner adding 15 points and five assists, Kara van Dyke 12 points and Amber Land 10 to go with 10 assists and eight rebounds.

Carley Mijovic delivered 23 points, eight rebounds, three blocked shots, two steals and two assists in the Eastern Suns' loss to the Flames on Saturday night while Natalia Soli'ai collected 11 boards and Sarah-Jane McMahon finished with eight points, eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks.
