Week 11 Sunday SBL wrap

HAVING not won a game since last May, the Kalamunda Eastern Suns won for a second time in nine days on Sunday handing the Geraldton Buccaneers a second loss well inside 24 hours in a remarkably high-scoring contest at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

Before beating the Lakeside Lightning in overtime last Friday night, the Eastern Suns had lost their last 26 Men's SBL matches dating back to a win over the Perth Redbacks on May 2 last year.

But that win over the Lightning gave Michael Clarke's men some confidence and then after a competitive showing in a loss to the Perth Redbacks on Friday night, they managed to hand the Buccs a second loss of the weekend on their road double.

The Buccaneers were without Matthew Adekponya who has been named to the SBL Team of the Week four times this season. However, the Suns were without Jarrad Prior who was named to the Team of the Week last round too.

The Buccs came to Perth for their double-header on Saturday night losing to the defending champion Joondalup Wolves 121-88 and couldn’t find a way to bounce back on Sunday afternoon, with the Suns running for the full 48 minutes, pushing the ball and delivering the 145-123 victory.

The Suns have shown a willingness to play an up-tempo style all season under Clarke as coach, and while it has led to some tough games particularly against the Cockburn Cougars and Willetton Tigers, the signs of progress has been there.

Particularly with their ability to score and now after putting up 145 points on Sunday, they are averaging 108.5 points for the season and the plan for the future is becoming clearly evident.

Kalamunda made a flying start on Sunday with 42 first quarter points. But Geraldton was hanging in there with 32 points themselves. The Suns delivered another 42 points in the second period with the Buccs scoring 28 to see the home team lead 84-60 at half-time.

Scoring 84 points even against a Buccaneers team missing some important players was quite an achievement.

The Eastern Suns managed to finish the job off with another 37 points in the fourth quarter despite being outscored in the third to record their second win of the season by 22 points over the third placed Buccaneers.

The Suns got off a massive 110 shots for the game making 53 at 48 per cent while also hitting 22-of-52 from three-point territory at 42 per cent. The Buccs had a good shooting game too going 41-of-76 from the floor at 53 per cent and 15-of-27 from downtown at 55 per cent.

But Kalamunda forced Geraldton into 28 turnovers and scored 39 points off those with the Buccs missing the poise of Luke Wrensted.

Brandon McGill finished with a big double-double for the Eastern Suns made up of 31 points and 11 assists to go with eight rebounds and two steals. He shot 12-of-16 from the field and 7-of-8 from three-point range.

Tim Squire had a big game too for the Suns with 31 points, six steals, six rebounds and five assists shooting 11-of-18 from the floor and 4-of-7 from three-point territory.

Kerrod Horn contributed 20 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals for Kalamunda making 5-of-12 of his shots from three-point range.

Courtney Belger also had 16 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals for the Suns, Ryan Blanchett 14 points and three assists, and Billy Grey 10 points.

Maurice Barrow top-scored for the Buccs again with 29 points to go with seven assists, six rebounds and three steals making 11-of-16 from the field.

Beau Samuelson stepped up for 20 points and three assists for Geraldton shooting 8-of-11 from the floor, and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.

Aaron Ralph did all he could off the bench with 27 points and five rebounds nailing 6-of-11 from three-point range with Mat Wundenberg adding 18 points, 21 rebounds, six assists and three blocked shots.

Charles Thurkle contributed 11 points, three rebounds and two assists, and Alex Ducas 10 points.
