Under 20 Australian Championship and Ivor Burge Championship - 2014

KALAMUNDA & DISTRICTS BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION was incorporated in September 1971 and is one of the oldest operating basketball associations in Western Australia. Basketball was first played in Kalamunda in 1964.

It is characterised by stable management and a strong domestic competition with 180 teams in each of two seasons per year – Approximately 1500 players. We would see this as an opportunity to draw attention to our fine competition and our excellent facility.

In July 2008 KDBA hosted the Australian Junior Championship for Under 16 players. This was a very successful carnival with many fine reviews presented to the Committee. In 2012 we played host to the Under 14 Boys and Girls Club Championships, with a fantastic carnival held in October over 6 days.

In the past KDBA has also hosted NBL preseason games as well as visiting AIA games.

KDBA plays as Kalamunda Eastern Suns in the WA State Basketball League and the Western Australian Basketball League.

RAY OWEN SPORTS CENTRE is owned by the Shire of Kalamunda and operated jointly by KDBA and Kalamunda & Districts Netball Assoc for the past 30 years.

The venue consists of 6 sprung board indoor basketball/netball courts and ten outdoor netball courts.

Recent improvements include automatic backboards on all courts, reverse cycle air-conditioning to Social Room, refurbishment of additional grandstanding. In 2008 additional toilets, storeroom, walkway and state of the art kiosk/café were added to the Centre.

We are looking to again showcase this excellent venue to the rest of Australia.

LOCALITY

The stadium is located in the eastern hills suburb of Lesmurdie in the Shire of Kalamunda.

Best access is by major highway along Orrong Road, Welshpool Road East with good access also from Roe Highway and Tonkin Highway.

Travelling time from the CBD would be 30 minutes and less from the major accommodation hub of Great Eastern Highway adjacent to Perth Domestic Airport.

The locality is noted for its beauty and is predominantly urban although it backs onto large areas of National Parks, State forest and orchards. The population of the Shire of Kalamunda is approximately 53,200 with most of the growth in the foothills of the Shire. It is a noted tourist hub with many attractions to the day-tripper and others wishing to partake of the many fine establishments in the region.

The area boasts a large number of Bed & Breakfast establishments, a small number of which are listed in the accommodation section of this document.

There are a large number of parks, walks and scenic drives to allow the parents and spectators to enjoy the unique hills area of Perth.

As can be seen from the ongoing development at the Ray Owen Sports Centre, Kalamunda & Districts Basketball Association is an active dynamic association who would welcome the opportunity to host the 2014 Under 20 Australian Championship and Ivor Burge Championship on behalf of Basketball Australia.

We have a proven track record of hosting a very successful Australian Junior Championships and the players and parents of Kalamunda are excited at the prospect of this new venture,
