Waratah Championship Men

The Waratah Championship League is the highest level of Basketball competition available to participants in New South Wales outside of the National Basketball League. Many players go on from the Waratah Championship League to play in either US Colleges or the NBL.

The Waratah Championship League features 12 teams and include Newcastle, Maitland, Central Coast, Manly, Norths, Hills, Hornsby, Penrith, Sydney, Illawarra, Bankstown and your own Sutherland Sharks.

The Sutherland Sharks hold the honour as being only one of two teams in NSW to have won three consecutive Men’s Championships; in 2006, 2007and 2008 and the time is fast approaching to raise another championship banner.

The Head Coach of the Sutherland Sharks Waratah Championship Men is none other than former Sydney Kings NBL player and Sutherland Sharks local hero, BJ Carter.

Coach Carter is the only player in the history of Sutherland Basketball who has had their local representative playing number retired, having been a member of the three consecutive Sharks Championships.

Coach Carter is highly respected by each individual within the Sutherland Basketball Association and indeed boasts the credentials needed to lead the Sutherland Sharks to their next Championship.

Coach Carter’s commitment to excellence is unsurpassed and his experiences on and off the basketball court leave the Sutherland Basketball Association no doubt that 2014 indeed is a year filled with promise and potential.

The Sutherland Sharks Men have been hard at training since October 2013, with one goal in mind – Success. The team embarked on the 2014 season with a perfect 5-0 record to start the season, placing them on top of the Waratah Championship ladder four weeks in.

Currently (June 30, 2014) the team sits in top spot with an 12-4 record. The goal of making the Finals Weekend in 2014 is fast becoming an achievable and realistic goal.

The Sutherland Sharks aim is to not only be successful on the court, but off the court, by giving back to our home basketball community in assisting with our junior team training sessions, to leading skills sessions and assisting local community charity events as the opportunities arise.

The Sutherland Sharks Waratah Championship Women did not compete in 2014, choosing to blood the association’s young talent within the Youth League Women’s competition- albeit with great success - currently sitting in third with a 6-2 record.

The Waratah Championship Women will however return in 2015 bigger and better with the aim of making the playoffs.
