Easts Claim Women’s Double
The Easts Roosters have claimed the 2012 Vawdon Cup/State Cup double, defeating the Wollongong Devils in the Women’s Open final at the 2012 State Cup.
Easts led for the entirety of the game before the Devils hit back late in the game, but it was too little too late, with the Roosters winning the title 5-4.
The Roosters started the game strongly and were quick to make it count on the scoreboard, with Ashleigh Quinlan setting up Josie Johnson for a touchdown in the fourth minute. Quinlan was back in the action soon after, setting up Maddison Studdon for a touchdown to give Easts at 2-0 lead.
The Devils were quick to bridge the gap, with the ball going through the hands to reach Sally Dwyer on the wing to trail by one touchdown.
Easts’ captain Kristy Judd was in the thick of the action soon after, latching onto a Quinlan pass after hitting a great hole to take a 3-1 lead.
It was 4-1 soon after when Quinlan sent a long ball to the wing, before the Devils’ Rachel Beck dived over to bring the deficit back to two touchdowns.
It was a case of déjà vu soon after, with Quinlan hitting the winger again, before Rachel Beck dived over for her second touchdown to take the score to 5-3.
Dwyer crossed for her second touchdown on the wing for the Devils off an overlap with minutes remaining to bring the score to 5-4 before the Roosters held out to take the win and the Vawdon Cup/State Cup double.
Birthday girl Quinlan was rewarded for her strong performance in the match, being named Player of the Final, to add to her Player of the Final honours in the 2012 Vawdon Cup final.
