PRESIDENT'S WELCOME

Since locals embraced rugby league here back in 1915 it has been an exciting, roller coaster ride.  The fortunes of the code have ebbed and flowed along with the economic wellbeing and associated employment opportunities within the District. We have been stronger, but then again we have also been weaker over the past 97 years.

The profile of the West Coast and its people, nationally and internationally, has benefited from the exploits of rugby league folk, on and off the field. In fact, rugby league has earned the status of a West Coast heritage icon, up there with whitebait and Monteiths.

Last year we hosted the Warriors and Knights in a NRL Charity fixture that set the record  for crowd attendance of 5,500. This year, while our Premier and U18s grade team numbers have slipped our Schoolboys (and girls) are booming with some 550 children in 41 teams.

Rugby League emerged from its origins of Northern Union in 1895 to be called `the modern game`, and then, 'the greatest game of all'.  Subsequently, it was promoted as 'the game for all the family', while more recently the NZRL rightly  reminds us it is 'more than just a game'.  All four desciptions resonate with rugby league folk as we look to the start of a new season.

The enthusiasm for our game is evident and 2012 will have something for everyone, from club to district and zone and on to NRL and the Kiwis. In launching this website we hope to develop it further, to serve not just those actively involved in the local game, but also to meet the interest evident in us from around the globe.

My warmest best wishes to you all.

Yours in Rugby League
