Victorian Christian College having a Ball at Easter Slam

Victorian Christian College Under 15’s coach Mark Eaton and his players are having a ball at the Easter Tournament. The team comprises of representative players drawn from various Christian schools across Metropolitan Melbourne.

“We are on our fourth visit to the tournament and love the standard of competition. The prospect of international travel and playing tournament basketball is exciting for the players” says Mark.

The tour party comprises of four teams, 3 boys teams and a girls teams. They are staying at the Millennium Institute and are enjoying the facilities and easy access to the playing venues.

Mark adds “The timing is ideal for us as there are no significant competitions over the Easter period in Melbourne. We are also enjoying the friendly atmosphere at the tournament – yesterday our boys got to hang out with the Harbour boys and have a little scrimmage.”

On court his Under 15 Blue team made it three victories from three outings with a 59-37 win over Harbour B. Outstanding guard Mitchell Jackson led the Vic scoring with 18 points ably assisted by forward Luke Magree (10 points) and Kye Taylor (12 points).

Sterner tests await the Vics when they come up against Harbour A and Auckland Counties Manukau A over the next couple of days.

Mitchell Jackson (18pts) and Patrick Morada were the pick of the Harbour B players.

Harbour A had a comfortable outing against Auckland Counties Manukau 2.

Harbour established a 16-5 first quarter advantage and won every quarter thereafter to cruise to a 72-24 success.

Coach Morgan Maskell has his team playing an exciting brand of basketball – pressure defence and structured half-court offence. Their transition game was also on song in this game. Miggy Falqueza led the scoring for Harbour with 12 points including a couple of efforts more suited to a circus act but it was the all-round team play under the direction of captain and point guard Harrison Clarke that really shone out.

Malcolm Patel (10pts) was a tireless worker for ACM 2.

Supercity Easter Slam Underway!

The 2014 Easter tournament got underway at YMCA North Shore on Friday morning. First up games were the Under 15 Girls Section featuring Auckland Counties Manukau A versus B teams and North Harbour B v Hawkes Bay.

Hawkes Bay guard Zoe Ebbitt had the distinction of scoring the first basket of the tournament although her team trailed 8-7 at quarter time.

Hawkes Bay coached by Suzie Brown went basket for basket with the Harbour Girls in the first half, Billie Paramore providing plenty of spark for the visitors who were behind 17-14 at half-time.

Guards Piper Manolas (Harbour) and Shaviah Chadwick (Hawkes Bay) were having a ding-dong battle but it was the Harbour girls led by Mareta Davidson, Nicole Craig and Kaitlyn Morrell who gained the ascendancy in the second half.

Final Score:

Harbour B 34 – Morrell 8, Ariana Henere 6, Davidson 5, Tessalonia Taio-Tomokino 5,

Hawkes Bay 21 – Rosie Sania 6, Paramore 5, Oriana Heke 4

The result of the game between the two Auckland Counties Manukau Girls was predictable with the A team winning 45-21.

Ngapipi Herewini gave the B team the lead for a brief period of time early in the first period but once the A team got into their rhythm there was only one winner.

The A’s were 24-11 ahead at half time helped by 8 points from Rionne Papa and were able to cruise to the win. A team coach Angela Perrott-Hunt would have been happy to hear the result. She flies back from Canberra today having concluded her commitments with the New Zealand under 18 Women’s team.

Final Score:

ACM A 45 – Papa 12, Riana Rangi Brown 12, Jodeci Josephs 5,

ACM B – 21 Ngapipi Herewini 9, Mele Latu 6.
