Doing Bench - the why and how!

As the parent of a representative basketball player, it is expected that at some time during the season you will be requested to 'Do Bench'. Some parents view this with slightly less enthusiasm than they would, say, for root-canal surgery without anaesthetic. He's got skills, so why is my child not starting?
